I was admiring this cover yesterday (synchronicity!), utterly amazed at how much thought went into it. It seems to me that today's predominantly 'pin-up' covers don't spring from much consideration.
Are there others covers from JB's X-men run that have been 'homaged' as much?

ACTION 1 is a tricky one. I did an FF cover with She-Hulk tossing a car, and it was meant as a "homage" to ACTION 1. But character-throwing-car is not automatically meant to reference Superman's debut. Consider, many have cited this cover of WHIZ COMICS as a "homage" to ACTION. 
It MAY have been, perhaps even unconsciously, but throwing or lifting a car is such an iconic superhero shot, I would not be inclined to include it in the "definitely" column.

I agree. It's not an homage. But, it does have some elements of Action #1 on purpose, if I could hazard a guess.
It "reads" to me like they were attempting to one-up Superman. Superman lifted a car over his head. Captain Marvel appears to be casually tossing a car. There is a slighly higher degree of violence displayed with those gangsters hurtling towards certain doom on the Captain Marvel cover. It makes sense. If you are attempting essentially a rip-off of the most popular comic hero, you'd want to advertise that your comic is more-action packed, your hero is stronger, etc.

Yes, I would say that WHIZ cover is more of a :-pppppppp than a homage!

141 is brilliant. The last cover JB did on the X-Men run. Leave 'em wanting more. I would say easily in the top 3 covers of all time.

I would say easily in the top 3 covers of all time.•• Now, THAT would be a difficult list to make! (I can already imagine people posting more than three, if the "challenge" was made.) Consideration would have to go not only to the skill of the artist, but also the historical significance.

The great thing about X-Men cover #141 is you can see the whole story in your mind and fill in the blanks without having to read anything. Just a great image!
The other fun thing is that you're able to take this layout and put in any team you like and get the same response. Just a brilliant idea.

Now, THAT would be a difficult list to make! ........................ The personal impact factor makes the list very subjective. Most of the iconic covers were done before I was born -- Action #1, Detective #1, FF #1, AF #15 etc. There are few covers that have become iconic since 1970, as far as I know, yet many of my favorite covers came after '70 because of personal impact. The later covers lack the historical impact, making it much harder to achieve iconic status which is a testament to 141's far reaching influence. For instance, one of my favorite covers is FF #51(which came out before 1970). I'm sure that is heavily influenced by the story inside, not the cover standing on it's own. That list would be almost impossible to make and come close to pleasing everyone.

If it's not X-MEN #141, GIANT-SIZE X-MEN #1 might be the post-1970 cover with the most homages.
And for anyone who might have just waken up out of a 40-year coma -
How could you possibly go wrong with Gil Kane pencils and Dave Cockrum inks?
