If the artist gave Cyclops a sword, I would agree Brian; that doesn't fit
the character. Giving someone a pocket doesn't change the character;
all human beings use "pockets" to carry stuff, whether it is on their
clothes or something they carry. It doesn't change the character; but it
is pointless if the writer doesn't use them.

It doesn't change the character, it just looks stupid. It seems like pockets
and shoulder pads seem to be all the rage for costume designs in the 80s. A
good costume design is clean and simple and only adds items for the
character. Not extra ones.

Regarding the wrist device on Cyclops: It may be that this is an X-Men team without a telepath and the device is a communicator of some sort so that he can coordinate the actions of the team. It could also be some sort of device he must wear while on parole for his recent crimes. Or it may be that Frank back at Electra-Base gave it to him... Cyclops' costume design looks like something a minor background character in an Eternals spin-off might wear... Hm. Also, odd casting of Magneto as a White Knight...

Well, at least now her fake boobs make sense. She won't have to worry about them falling out of that costume!
I do believe Marvel is putting together a 12-part story arc explaining Emma's real mutant ability - low-level telekinesis - and the psychology behind just how she uses it to keep her boobs in place during times of trouble.

And I see the 90's shoulder pads for female characters are back. Emma also
has the same stupid butt high boots and short shorts as Magik. Is this the X-
Men or Hellfire Club (S&M).

There's no visual short-hand in these designs at all.
This thread nails it.
A hero's "fighting suit", be it a costume, uniform, or even if it's a street clothes design, needs to have a distinct design so they "pop" out from the other characters, but also to fill in new readers on what these characters are about and can do.
I was just talking about this with my fiancee, and while she'd not a huge super-hero fan, she agreed that these costumes were just, well, bad.
Her main thought?
"How could he see out of his helmet?"
...oh well
Also...why does a guy with death-beam eyes need a utility belt?

My first reaction to that Cyclops costume is that it would be more appropriate for Daredevil.
Then I came to my senses and realized it was also a shitty Daredevil costume too.
