Correct etiquette is to smile, nod, and quietly say "I enjoy your work." iiii This guideline could also potentially save face for the fan who recognizes a person as famous but has them confused with someone else.

(Interestingly, I used to work with a (Nameless) News celebrity whose personal assistant told me that that he has all his shopping done for him as he hasn't set foot in a mall in over 10 YEARS!!! Due to the unwanted fan fair when he's inevitably recognized.)

Actors are not special, are they? They deserve special rules why?
I may be on the wrong forum fo this discussion, but, I have friends who
are now at Emerson who truly believe they are on the path to Royalty.
Again, why?
Baffles me, it does.

(Even as a microscopically minor "celebrity" I have experienced the downside of this "rule" not being followed. Being hailed as I cross a hotel lobby, for instance. "Hey! Are you John Byrne?" And a dozen heads turn, and a dozen hands reach for books to get signed. . . )

Only a true idol o' millions can get that kind of reaction from his adoring public! :D
Seriously though, I can understand how celebs may want privacy when they are out and about. A friend of mine bumped into David Tennant awhile awhile ago (at the time when David was working on Doctor Who... the joys of living in Cardiff!), and quietly approached him just to say hello and shake his hand. He told me that David really appreciated his quiet approach, as he was out having a quiet afternoon with his then girlfriend.

I've met a few famous people....including Ray Parks (Darth Maul....at LAX airport), Thom Yorke (Radiohead fame), Jimmy Connors and Nick Frost (from Shaun of the Dead)....on every occasion, something inside my brain has urged me to talk to them but not at some fanboy level but at a very "human" level.... How you doin? how's your day? before then plunging into some question about how they found "the flight" or Venice (thats where i met Thom Yorke...in a gym in a hotel).... I guess my point is...treat famous people as people and they are morely likely to be conversant and polite than if you make a big deal out of their "celebrity-ness"..thats my experience anyway.

...treat famous people as if they are people...••• Multiply that by 10, by 100, by 1000. Still sound like a good idea? Now add the fact that many people are loud, aggressive and boorish, especially when confronted with celebrities they feel they have "equalize", to put on their level. Celebrities ARE people, too. And, as people, WE should remember how we prefer to be treated as we move thru the "normal" parts of our day.

I remember a guy calling to complain on a radio show because when he'd seen a local athlete at an amusement park (on vacation with his family) he wouldn't stop to sign autographs...
What's worse for a celebrity: always being recognized, or never being recognized?
(I'd think being recognized but not harassed.)
By the way, didn't you used to be John Byrne?

SER: And there's a good chance he'd already signed about a dozen prior to this guy showing up.
It seems like with all the conventions and Comic-Con-type events in which fans can interact with celebrities, it would be considered fair to not bother them when they are clearly "off the clock."
