JB, on Aint it Cool they have a podcast of Jerry Ordway mentioning that you were originally slated to draw Mark Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme. Is this true, and how did this awesomeness not come to be?

I don't remember this being officially official. Gruenie and I talked about it, but the Squadron wasn't all that much interest to me.

And to think that in some alternate reality, I'd have been able to read this series!

That certainly would have changed things for me.  I bought the first issue as a kid and couldn't get into it.  YEARS later I found out that it had some critical acclaim but never found the desire to seek it out based on my first experience.  But anything JB did was a definite buy.  I would have been 'in' for the entire series.

Bill & Brad, you should give the mini-series a chance. It was probably Mark Gruenwald's finest work.

If the book had one single artist from beginning to end, I might have enjoyed it more, but I don't really see it as a standout work.  Gruenwald's "The Captain" storyline from Captain America #332-350 is where he's firing on all cylinders, but something about Squadron Supreme never really comes together to form a compelling whole.

Matt, I have read the Squadron Supreme! I've been a fan since I picked it up many, many moons ago. It just would have been so much cooler with JB handling the pencils, as I've always felt that the change in artists was a weak point.

A very good series. Mark G doing the JLA better than DC were doing it at the time. His Captain America run was consistently good too. A much underrated writer.

I have a soft spot for the Squadron Supreme, and I think the mini is good but not great.  One of its weak areas is the art, which is uneven and pretty mediocre.  JB's artwork would have elevated that story quite a bit.

I loved that series.  Since it wasn't a major book (ie Superman, Spider-man etc) I recall having to track down the issues at different locals.  Convenience stores, super market, drug stores and others.  It was a challenge, but a fun one and when I did find the issues it was all the more rewarding.  I miss those times.

JB on the Squadron Supreme is a combination that I would love to see (along with JB on Captain Mar-Vell).
