This format is one of my favorites - the black & white shows us the artwork as it left the inker's table, which has helped given me a new appreciation for the artistry of comic books.

Some titles, like MOON KNIGHT, look better in black and white.  A few of JB's titles gain more gravitas in B&W, like UNCANNY X-MEN and IRON FIST.

And I love the paper stock - it feels like a comic book in more ways than one.

I too love the Essentials and Showcases. Sorry to hear at least one of them is going (probably to force us to buy the "epic" f/c trades).

I have thought for ages that Marvel's old b/w line of magazines (which I mostly loved) could have been collected in the Essentials format. (They did "Rampaging Hulk" and DC did Marvel's "Doc Savage).

Would have loved to see Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction collected! And Bizarre Adventures....

I really wanted the Essential "The Spectacular Spider-Man" with the Sal Buscema solo art years in black and white, now it seems my dreams are dashed.

Cheers, Peter

Joe, that's a crazy collection of Essentials!

I'm going to miss these. I buy color reprints of my absolute favorites (Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man) and I have my fair share of Essentials for the rest (Web, PPSS, X-men, FF, Defenders, etc.)

Slightly off-topic but I'm glad that I picked up HULK: PARDONED from a markdown bin this past weekend. This is a TPB (all in color) from the Mantlo-Buscema run, issues 269-285. $39.95 cover price which I got brand new for $12! Perfect timing since the Essentials never got this far in the series.

We're big fans of Essential and Showcase- my 8 year daughter has devoured Wonder Woman, early Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes and is now plowing through Avengers and Teen Titans. Almost every morning I wake up to find her eating breakfast with her face buried in one of them!

While browsing AMAZON I ran across SHOWCASE PRESENTS: LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES Vol. 5 for pre-order.

Joe, great shots of your ESSENTIAL and SHOWCASE love.

Hmm, I better get the missing Avengers one and all the FF ones before they go out of print then.

I've used Essentials to collect the comics series that I only have scattered throughout UK comics such as Warlock (in Star Wars), Captain Marvel, Avengers and Spider-Man. FF has been on my list for some time but I've not got around to it, time to start fixing that I think.

Reading the update on Bleeding Cool, it looks like the reports of the demise of the "Essentials" line may have been premature:

Update at article.

Cautiously optimistic that I'll be seeing volumes 8, 9, and 10 of the Hulk, that the Defenders will get completed, we'll see another Sgt. Fury volume...??
