You know, looking at the track record of the last series and watching
the current one stumble quickly, a Heroes Reborn type contract with
you in the drivers seat is probably the best thing for the characters as
a comic book. Even if you looked at it from a strict business
perspective.
Hickman's run was well reviewed but man, was it complicated.
Fraction and Robinson's runs quickly went to the basement
considering the title. Sadly, I don't think anything is going to happen
until the beginning of 2016, after the upcoming movie has had time to
hit stores as a DVD/ BluRay release. Even then, I think letting you
handle both writing and art chores on the book would be one heck of
an announcement that would generate the word of mouth to make FF
"The World's Greatest Comic Magazine" once more.

I don't think this is just to spite Fox - this seems like something more strategic. They want something. Marvel's long game is that they want the rights to the Fantastic Four back. Could you imagine the amazing movie that team could make? That's what they ultimately want.
Or maybe they are looking for something short term - possibly a better cut of the gross? The X-Men numbers must be driving them crazy. Marvel could cancel the book/promotion as leverage against Fox - they could ask for more money and greater creative control. This could be a ransom situation, much the same as when TV networks and cable companies feud. Many people in Los Angeles cannot watch Dodgers baseball games these days because their network is owned by Time Warner Cable, and they want a hefty fee to carry the channel. DirectTV is balking, so their subscribers get no ball games. Marvel could be threatening a similar strategy by ceasing visibility/promotion of the characters until they get a cut.
But even of they want these short term goals, their long term strategy is likely to get the the rights back. Would shelving the characters for a significant time do that?

During the 75th Anniversary no less.
How do they think this will generate less publicity that if they just carried on publishing the comic? This will make national news (potentially), publishing the comic would not.
Right, where's the Kickstarter to buy the comic license for JB?

It's sad to have to admit, but Marvel and DC were in better shape when they were owned by heartless tobacco and magazine magnates who only cared about the bottom line and kept their noses out of the creative side of things; now they're run by heartless multi-media execs who can't stop butting in, regardless of the fact that they are completely devoid of even a modicum of artistic talent or understanding.

There would BE no Marvel Comics without the Fantastic Four.
It seems somehow fitting-- coming full-circle, even--that the FF would
be at the center of this thing. This is just one more piece of evidence
that Marvel as it was is dead and gone. If I still bought or read modern
comics, I might care about this.
Excuse me, I have to get back to my Lee-Kirby FF Omnibus. Having a
ball, reading that material!

I wonder what this is meant to accomplish? Is cancelling the titles really going to hurt the movies? Most of the audience doesn't read the books. The readers. Are they going to see or avoid the movie based on this? I sure as hell am not going to see it. However, it has nothing to do with this decision. While I'd like to think that this is about marvel protesting the version of the characters that the movie is giving us, the link I read made it seem like it was about their strained relationship with Fox.

If anything, Marvel should put out lots of books that hew as closely as possible to Lee and Kirby's FF, to remind fans what Fox's upcoming movie is missing (namely the FF).

Well, Marvel has come out saying the idea is ridiculous. Which, I
agree it is ridiculous but that doesn't make the info false. Really, how
do you put together a 75th anniversary omnibus and not put the FF on
the cover but DO put the GOTG?
Of course, now that this has gone public I sure it changes things.
