I think" Saturday morning cartoon" when I see that picture.

••

Not a problem, in and of itself. After all, the classic Batman of the Forties, Fifties and even on into the Sixties was pretty "cartoony."

Of course, that was back in the days when the CHARACTERS were more important than the latest stunt or flavor-of-the-month artist, and everybody drew the SAME Batman.

Remember how Dave Cockrum heavily redrew my versions of the X-Men when they appeared in IRON FIST? I wonder, when was the last time something like THAT happened?

His head did seem to level off abruptly in the original. I'm also struck that Bruce Wayne doesn't seem to have a look for me. I would not have identified that face as Bruce Wayne without the dialog. Peter Parker and Reed Richards both have a set appearance in my mind that I can distinguish, but not Bruce.

••

Unfortunately, Bruce Wayne has never really had a consistent look. "Handsome White guy" is about as good as it gets.

(Don Thompson, back when anybody paid any attention to CBG, even used this to defend the casting of Michael Keaton. "He's been drawn so many ways, by so many artists, how do we know what he looks like?" Well, I said, we may not know exactly what he looks like, but we know what he DOESN'T look like, i.e., a short, curly haired guy with buck teeth and a nubbin chin.)*

------------------

* Down thru the decades, one of Hollywood's most curious quirks had been the frequent casting of people with distinctive mouths and chins to play masked characters. The latest, of course, is Ben Affleck's Batman. That's HUGE cleft in his chin wouldn't tip ANYBODY to it being Bruce Wayne under the cowl!

I think you hit the nail on the head JB. I don't have a specific face for Bruce Wayne, but I know what he doesn't look like.

So Dick Grayson is now a non-masked, gun-toting
character?

*sigh* I soooooo (don't) look forward to Batman wearing a
football helmet and trading the batarang (and those
throwing blade things) in for a pair of machetes.

Seriously, though, isn't Jason Todd/Red Hood/Whatever the
heck he's called right now more or less DC's version of
the Punisher?

And wouldn't carrying guns go against everything that
Batman taught Dick? I know Dick was a police officer for
a while, but still...

I could use any number of characters to fill the role that they're currently shoehorning Dick Grayson into. Terminator. Deadshot. Talia Al Ghul.

I chalk this one up to DC's current editorial and managerial regimes being part of the In Crowd that seems to find it embarrassing to write and draw the traditional American superhero. That's not something I want to see here.

........
I think the fact the he was a police officer is not
something you can just push aside. He had a different
attitude to guns than Bruce does.

While I do not plan to get this series and really think
this it's just an attempt to capitalize on Winter Soldier,
one should note that this is a story about him being
undercover on a mission for Batman in a situation that he
feels her can only trust Dick to do the job.

What's sad is that there are a new generation of fans that support these "creative directions" using the excuse that changes have been done to these characters for years. It's like no one gets the difference between a bad idea and a good one… it's all up to interpretation.

*sigh*
