The opposite can apply too. At the last con I went to, there was a girl who did a really impressive Darth Maul. The only issue was that, when people wanted a photo, she would smile in them. It looked strange. I think being "in character" for photos is kind of expected. •• Of course. It's the "method actors" who are the problem!!

I think cosplay (I was happier a few years ago, before I even knew the term) is yet another way that kids have been shoved out and barred from comicbooks.

Also applies to promoting yourself (I've seen it in Irish comic creators).

The cosplay folks I've met seem to take the same approach as the professional costumed characters you'd see at a theme park. When you're on the floor and posing for pictures, you feel an obligation to "be" Batgirl, Hellboy, etc. since that makes for better photos of you and your costume when they're posted online. I actually like that a lot better than seeing a shlubby "I just don't care anymore" Captain America dragging himself around a convention floor.

At the next con, perhaps I'll play Steve Rogers AFTER they remove the super soldier formula!

I keep on clicking on this thread hoping to see pics of cosplay chicks.•• Let's NOT go there, please!! We have plenty of experience of how quickly such threads go. . . astray.
