I discovered The Silver Surfer through this series, so it retains a lot of nostalgic appeal for me. But it didn't really go anywhere, as Greg noted, and it was a bit too much of its time, as others noted too. The art is among my favorite that I've ever seen and I still adore above all the issue with Thor.

I believe it was Jim Starlin that revealed that the reason the Surfer had a surfboard is because Galactus pulled this image from his mind when he transformed him. Apparently, by coincidence, they developed surfing on Zenn-La as a parallel. I loved that run...but that was kinda silly. Then again, what other explanation could there be? Galactus was already spying on Earth and became a fan of surfing?

JB, you did a Surfer story back in 1982 (Escape--To Terror) that credits both you and Stan Lee as writers. What was that collaboration like? How much influence did you have on the Surfer's character? Was there back and forth discussions, or were you guys ever in the same room together during the plotting? Thanks.

No collaboration. I plotted and drew it, expecting to script it myself. Then Shooter had the bright idea of getting Stan to script it.

Coincidence? Parallel evolution? IT'S A COMIC BOOK?

Second --- well, when it comes to the board, we will have to agree to
disagree. I think the concept is quite brilliant.

Ditto. And, really, as an incredibly simple and elegant--almost abstract--
space vehicle, it makes a surprising amount of sense.

Having the Surfer fly through the cosmos under his own power wouldn't
be nearly as visually interesting, of course. Aside from, say, a Metron-
style flying chair, the board is the most simplistic sort of vehicle one
could have, with bonus room for the occasional passenger or two.

The skis of the Black Racer, on the other hand, are a bit too Earrh-
referential, for my tastes. The Surfer's look has proven quite timeless.
I'm just glad that Kirby dropped the fin on the bottom, almost
immediately.

The board certainly has the virtue, inter alia, of capitalizing upon the classic sci-fi metaphor of the ocean of space.

I got a chance to talk to Stan Lee for a moment once at a convention and asked him, specifically, what work he had done that he liked best.  He thought about it then said the 1968 Silver Surfer series.  He admitted it hadn't gone over with the fans as hoped but he said he never poured more of himself into anything (many of the early issues were 40 pagers) and that the results had pleased him.  My own personal opinion is that though the series did come to repeat a tried and true formula of frequent betrayal and misunderstanding by the humans he was trying to protect, there were some truly iconic moments and issues.  It's probably good the series ended when it did, though.

1- As I recall it ends on a total cliffhanger am I right? When did Silver
Surfer appear after the final issue of this series? Did they just move on
or ever try to pick up where they left off?
++++++++++++

Some quick research indicates that he made a few appearances in
SUB-MARINER and THOR (and co-founded the Defenders) shortly
after his series was cancelled. Haven't read those stories, but I have a
feeling that the whole "savage Silver Surfer" cliffhanger was quietly
dropped. Can anyone confirm?

Of course, I agree to all three possibilities, but there is still a little part of me that likes that idea that the REAL reason Galactus spared Earth is because of his love of surfing.

Never really thought about it before, but something I always associate surfers with is "locals only".  Not that I've known too many of them but for some reason, that seems a very prevalent mantra in their community.

Maybe that's just the difference between the guys who only ever stay local and the one's that travel the world(galaxy) like Silver Surfer.  Maybe those guys are more "Zen" and the local guys are...less enlightened?

"He just does" works for me.
