When I look back on the early days of my being a comics fan, I feel stupid for thinking, at the time, that Kirby's art wasn't very good. I started on stuff by JB, John Buscema, Ron Frenz, Walt Simonson, and others whose work seemed more realistic to me. When I was first exposed to artists like Kirby and Ditko via reprints, their art seemed too cartoony to me and it just didn't sink in how dynamic and unique it was.

But now, when I think how much enjoyment and wonder I've had reading Kirby's work in the years since I finally "got it," I'm amazed that I ever didn't appreciate it. Just thinking about his work today makes me wish I had time right now to sit and reread his FF run.

By sheer coincidence, I stumbled upon this for the very first time - can't believe I'd never heard of this before (particularly since it's just such a great pairing!):

TheRedCircle.com - Jack Kirby's 'The Prisoner'

Happy Birthday, Mr. Kirby!

Mr. Aron Smith, do not feel alone, my experience is almost identical to yours! I do not know what happened, I was no fool, I got taste; I already was a "Byrne Victim" (was that the 90's concept?), I adored George Perez, Frank Miller, Ron Frenz, Jim Aparo, etc., but at the same time I was attracted to Todd Mcfarlane and... Rob Liefeld. Oh youth so foolish, so much to learn.

The difference from you was (to add more shame to my error) that I did not think that Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko were cartoony, I thought they were SIMPLE!

Happy Birthday to the King, and Thank you!

My first exposure to Kirby was at age 10 or so. There was a collection of reprints of Captain America stories called Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty which my parents bought for me. It includes a few Lee/Kirby stories from the 1960s, including my favorite, the first Cosmic Cube story.

So I can honestly say I was a Kirby fan from a young age. I mean, how can you not love art like THIS?

CBR currently has a poll asking which creation of Kirby's is your favorite.  Trying to pick one is impossible, but with that poll you had no choice but to pick only one!

So I'll toss the question out to one and all:  Which ONE creation by Kirby is your favorite?   For me it's the New Gods/Fourth World stuff.

If we eliminate co-creations, such as Captain America or the FF, concentrating on PURE Kirby, I'll also go with the Fourth World.
