Lloyd, you made a decision that I should've made for my cat Pinky over 7 years ago now. It's hard, but when you see them suffering the way they do and you're in no position to be there for them at the time, it becomes a choice of letting them suffer even more or finding some way to ease their suffering. Pull through this; you had a good long run with your little friend, more than most of us could hope for.

(My cat Pinky was about the same age -- 17. That's a long time for a cat.)

Again, thanks for letting me share this with you, and for sharing your experiences with me.

For those of you who've gone through this before: Did you hesitate before getting another pet? How long did you wait? Was it difficult?

If I didn't have an asthma problem and live in a house where the decision was made not to get another pet (of any kind), I'd have had another one within the year. As much as I love cats, I realize now that if I get another one, the albuterol use will start to creep back up in a matter of months. The decision wasn't so hard for me once I got past the first few months.

As for the kitty fix, I can walk into a room with cats and hang around for a few minutes without a problem. I visit pet adoption centers just for that these days.

Lloyd, first of all, sorry for your loss. I know what horrible pain that can be. Worse, because many people don't understand your grief, with a "it's just a dog/ cat" attitude.

I've had dogs all my life. I have three now. I tell you, it isn't easier having more, but you all get to grieve together, which makes it better.

Everybody's different, but you'll know when the time is right. Don't think about it as replacing your friend, but adding a new companion.

For me it was different each time.

Back in 2010 when one of my 2 cats contracted pancreatitis and needed to be put to sleep.  I was never "ready", but we got the most gorgeous and loving grey kitten a few months later.  I only found out about her because someone at work was looking to adopt a kitten and I got curious about the shelter.  Starting looking through the site, etc.

2 years later, when the older cat's diabetes was beginning to cause mini-strikes, we had to do what was best for him then.  However, 1 week later we fell in love with a black kitten who was full of "cat-titude" at the vet's and we picked her up.  100% unexpected.

In both cases, I "knew" I was not ready, but they both came into my life at that right moment any way.  I still miss both of the cats that are no longer here, but I love the 2 we have now just as much.  In my head, I was never ready for another cat, but my heart knew when I was.  "Something" will tell you when you're ready.  It may be tomorrow or it may be a year, you can never tell.  Cats have a way of showing up in your life you need them the most...

Kringle will forever be in your heart, but in time another special feline will join her there.  Trust me, they will find you, even if you feel like you're not ready.

Lloyd - I was devastated when I had to put down our cat in 2004. She
was the first my wife and I had together and I was really attached to
her. In all honesty, it took me a while to get over losing her. It was
almost two years before I felt the pull to get another. Maybe you'll be
different, but I expect you'll know when the time is right.

Lloyd,

Very sorry to hear the difficult news.  However, it looks like that was one lucky pet to have an owner as caring as you.

My condolences.
