Wasn't this mentioned or implied in "Origin"? I can't keep track anymore.

Origin left the question open, but later stories have confirmed that despite looking exactly like Sabertooth, Dog Logan is not Sabertooth.

And didn't Loeb make Wolverine and Sabretooth mutated wolves from ancient Rome?

ancient Rome?

----

Not exactly. He introduced a villain called Romulus who was an
immortal from a race of humans that descended from wolves, rather
than apes, and all feral mutants like Wolverine and Sabretooth were
supposed to be descended from this branch of humanity. (Feral and
Thornn from X-Force were also included in this group despite being
FELINE mutants.) Also Romulus was the secret architect of the
Weapon X project.

In the end, they left it open to all being an elaborate* lie on Romulus'
part.

*By elaborate, I mean stupid and nonsensical.

There have been many horrible things done to/with Wolverine, but, IMHO, ORIGIN has to the absolute worst.

I haaaaate that story so much.

What was supposed to answer questions (that never should have been answered in the first place) only raised more questions. And ridiculous ones, at that.

I think the "Me, I know my father" line from the Claremont/Miller limited series was about as far as they should have taken it.

Another thing to note is that X-Men #125 and Avengers
#187 shipped the same month!

ORIGIN seemed to be solely built around the reveal: "Hey, you know
that prissy, sickly boy being bullied by that mean kid whose father looks
like Wolverine? It turns out the sickly boy is Wolverine! What a twist!"

Also, it needed to explain why Wolverine had a thing for redheads.
Because no man would EVER be interested in a redhead, unless it
involved an elaborate backstory.

I vehemently (but respectfully) disagree on this point! ;)

"Origin" was a bad Barbara Cartland novel dishonestly sold as a kick-ass Marvel event.

Certainly Roy Thomas and Neal Adams should get some of the credit for planting the idea of Magneto as Wanda & Pietro's father in the collective unconscious when they showed us Magneto looked like this under his helmet:

Even if Roy later allowed himself to go off the rails with his tiresome, boring Golden Age infatuations and bring in the idea that the Whizzer and Miss America were their true parents. Was it first revealed in that origin that the two were twins? It's been awhile since I've read the story.

Sadly, in superhero comics there has arisen in the past few decades a need to explain EVERYTHING. Even good writers have, on occasion, slipped into this rut.

DC almost certainly started it, by insisting on giving us "origins" for things like Clark Kent's blue suit, or even Green Lantern's oath!

It DOES become preposterous, tho, when "backstory" has to be given on why Superman has a pledge against killing, or why Wolverine likes redheads!!

Ronald, I don't remember that line at all.

Here you go! It was very early in Issue #1.
