Wow! This blows everything current, out there in comics-land, square out of the water.
I love the way you (John) draw that Watcher & this is a great example here.

I love Wolverine's reaction to Nightcrawler's sudden appearance.•• Hmm. You don't think he might be reacting to Phoenix, like everybody else?

So many things going on. So many stories told in essentially one big panel. I particularly like Nightcrawler teleporting away from the Smasher's punch. What really caught my eye though, was the angle of Wolverine's claws on his right hand. For how many times you have drawn him JB there is always something else in the tank.Yes, the reactions to Phoenix are great as well, in particular Hank/Beast. A fantastic commission. Congrats to the lucky owner....

The "twist" came from not wanting to ask John for a exact copy of Back to the Moon from 2006. In that commission the cover to 137 was used (genius) . So since that was used I asked for Dark Phoenix. Always loved the Phoenix effect and the wicked evil looks. I think it turned out amazing.

The "twist" came from not wanting to ask John for a exact copy of Back to the Moon from 2006.•• And glad I was that you asked for that "twist," David! I have drawn variants of this (dare I say?) iconic scene 1,497 times, and I'm always pleased when the customer asks for something that makes it a little bit different! 'Course, every time I draw this scene, I get all wistful and nostalgic, thinking about when I first "met" Jean... ...never imagining in my wildest dreams that I would some day be instrumental in her "death." I wonder -- would it have done any good if Chris and I had fought harder against Shooter? If we had insisted that, having been kept informed of what we were doing right from the start, he had no business to pull the rug out from under us at the last minute, invoking that dreaded Whim of Iron? The Dark Phoenix Saga would probably have faded into obscurity, but for the overall health of the X-Men and the industry, that would most likely have been for the best!

Wonderful! A commission almost unworthy of being seen in anything but full-size!!

I love the way you draw Cyclops now, he seems more Neal Adams now, Maybe because of your tenure on the Hidden years?

Wow... I get the feeling this will be one hanging on an art museum wall some day.
Wolverine is always my favorite, and even tho the primary focal point is the Dark Phoenix my eye keeps being drawn to back to him! GREAT JOB!

Smasher reacting to Nightcrawler 'bamfing' away is the best part for me. That little 'story in the story' is a real gem.
Excellent work. Just amazing.

I love the way you draw Cyclops now, he seems more Neal Adams now, Maybe because of your tenure on the Hidden years?•• It has more to do with the absence of Jim Shooter. I was not truly happy with any of the drawings I did of Cyclops during my run on UNCANNY. Back then I had Shooter (metaphorically) looming over me, telling me I had to make Scott "bigger and more muscular" so that he would "look like a leader."* Ironic, I suppose, given that a few years later, with the birth of X-FACTOR, he'd gone to the other end of the spectrum, and was demanding "Slim" Summers. ________ * The only time a slender Cyclops appeared was when I drew him in silhouette. Terry had a habit of inking inside the edges of silhouetted characters, causing them to suddenly drop ten or fifteen pounds!
