So in the end, it's a popularity contest, not an un-biased analytic of influential power. Quietly only needed 92 popularity votes (technically only 54) to make second place.

Was this list wide-open to start with? Or did CBR offer a list to start from?

In the end, I'm glad for the list. It wouldn't be my list but it got me to look at some artists I hadn't seen or noticed before.

Always good to see JB getting well-deserved recognition, but this list is for the most part BS. The person on second place basically seals that point.

It was an open list.

You just have to take this list for what it is.  It just represents the opinions of comic book fans who visit CBR's website, which is a fraction of comic fans out there.

I don't have a huge issue with the artists they included, but it differs a great deal from the artists I would pick.

I certainly have no problem with George being above me, tho I expect he would dispute, as I do, being above Neal and several others.

BTW, are my old eyes betraying me, or is Garcia Lopez NOT on the list? But McFarlane is? Kinda voids the whole thing!

There's more than one on that list that voids it for me.

That mystery's not too difficult to solve, unfortunately.  All of McFarlane's major Marvel Comics work and all of his work on Spawn is very readily available in trade paperbacks, hardcovers, digitally, etc.  Garcia-Lopez's never had a really comprehensive collection of his work, and one of the few books where he did a substantial amount of interior art, Atari Force, might never see a collected edition.  Batman/Hulk might not ever get a reprint, for that matter.

Garcia-Lopez might be the most widely-seen DC Comics artist of all time, but millions of kid who grew up with his art on licensed products never knew his name.  A massive collection of his licensing art and style guides would go a long way toward fixing that, I think.

Can't imagine DC ever reprinting the style guide, beautiful as it is. That would be like announcing "LOOK HOW BADLY WE'VE FUCTUP THESE CHARACTERS!"

++++++++

I've been seeing his DC style guide art on a bunch of merchandise, in
local stores, lately--notebooks, tumblers, etc. It's great to see!

Garcia-Lopez's version, thankfully, still seems to be the default for a lot of merchandise.  No matter how much extra detail they add to the current comic book costumes and no matter how "realistic" the movie and live-action versions get, licensing always goes back to Garcia-Lopez.  I don't know any pro in the industry who wouldn't want a nice hardcover version of that style guide on his bookshelf.

I don't get why Quitely is so popular. People actually like the way he draws, say, Batman? Yikes.

(Or maybe We3 was just much more popular a mini-series than I ever imagined.)
