"Garcia-Lopez's version, thankfully, still seems to be the default for a lot of merchandise"

...

It's probably the  way most people have seen DC characters in a national retail store since the early eighties.
The only way I'm going to see it also, the guide is going for $500 on Ebay.

I was recently told that artists who come to work for DC
are now given a digital copy of the guide.

Calculated as it was from fan submitted top ten lists, this ranking is less a critical ranking than a measurement of where the artists reside in fan consciousness. It's interesting to see the shifts since previous votes. It looks like the number of voters has increased considerably over the years. Wallace Wood wasn't even in the top 50 in 2010, and this year he's in the top 25, which might be due to the feast of recent reprints.

JB: Why?
*************
Really. Remember when you could identify the characters even when they weren't in costume, when you could tell Bruce Wayne from Dick Grayson from Clark Kent? Ray Palmer from Hal Jordan?

DC does produce ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN and BATMAN BLACK & WHITE anthologies, and I recently saw SENSATION COMICS with Wonder Woman (not sure if that's ongoing tho') where the creators seem to have the freedom to use any visual they want for the stars and most of the time they choose the classic costumes (shorts and everything!), as seen in the Garcia-Lopez guidebooks.

Of course, does anybody really need guides for those three costumes? I'm a non-pro and I've had those costumes memorized since I was nine.

At the same time, over on SUPERMAN UNCHAINED (the series that seems to exist only to showcase Jim Lee drawing his armored redesign for Superman), each issue has had multiple variant covers--many showing Superman in the classic (non-armor, with trunks) costume!

SOMEBODY at DC really needs to take a business class on BRANDING!

I don't get why Quitely is so popular. People actually like the way he
draws, say, Batman? Yikes.

********

Readers must like when people appear to have a deadly disease that
horribly mutants their features......

or readers just have poor taste.

==========
THAT has been my biggest gripe about the New Fifty-Poo costume
designs. Forget the fact that the costume designs are so bad that no
one can seem to draw them on model. How do you take a character
that has the brand recognition of Superman and decide to change
what's worked for over 70 years!?

BTW JB, your point about Garcia-Lopez is dead on. don't have one
yet, but the DC Style Guide is one of my comic book Grail items. One
day...

In the rest of the world (i.e., not just comics), Neil Gaiman is considerably more popular than all other writers who've written comics.

I don't suppose Los Bros Hernandez were on the list? Or Steve Gerber?

The mention of the Hernandez brothers makes me realize how wonky these lists gets when you expand beyond North American superhero comics.  Jaime Hernandez has never drawn a bad page in his life.  And how many artists are in Moebius's league?  How do you compare Osamu Tezuka's art style with Hayao Miyazaki's, or Chris Ware's, or Harvey Kurtzman's, or Jack Davis's, which are in a completely different world than Gahan Wilson's?  Are Dan Clowes and Brian Michael Bendis trying to tell the same kind of stories?
