I still recall the time I thought I'd stumbled onto something no one else knew about. Cinco de Mayo(more like Cincodemayo in my head) was on May 5th every year. Granted, I was 10 at the time and didn't know too many spanish words.

JB: Not certain this is what you're looking for, but when I was a kid I thought the name of Superman's city- stealing foe was pronounced "Bran-ick." It wasn't until years later that my brain focused and I realized it was "Brain-ee-ack." That was more of an eye-roll than a "duh," tho. When I got the correct pronunciation I realized this was yet another villain who was basically called "Mr. Badguy."
SER: I have a fondness for "Mr. Badguy" names, but as much as I like "Sinestro," it seems inappropriate for a villain who started off as a hero. What did the Guardians expect?
("Judas" also sounds like someone you shouldn't trust but I think that's more a case of the name retroactively assuming a negative connotation -- same with "Delilah").

I didn't think about the names for "Arby's" or "Frank Einstein" before! Yet more "duh" moments for me!
Here's a couple others:
It took me some years before l realized "Ms. Tree" was supposed to be a play on "mystery". I also thought the Image comic titled "DV-8" was just a goofy title until I read the name aloud one day and realized it was a play on "deviate," which makes sense given the comic.
Duh!
One that I did get right away, but too many people I have come across did not because they did not recognize the pronunciation of a written word is "Hard Corps." I know a number of people that pronounced it "hard corpse" instead of "hardcore."

This was a duh moment for the longest time growing up I would mispronounce JB's last name. I use to pronounce it Byron. It really was a duh moment for me the first time I went into a comic book store and was finally corrected. I was so glad It happened before I actually met John.It would have been so embarrassing to have addressed him wrong.

It was only in the last couple of years that I recognised the arrow in the middle of FedEx's logo.

I did not immediately realize the Amazon "smile" was also an arrow positioned to reflect that the site had everything from A to Z.

There's nothing intrinsically villainous about "Brainiac." With a lower case B it's just slang -- usually sarcastic in some fashion -- for a smart person. But when a badguy USES it, it becomes a badguy name. (And, yes, I am aware of Brainiac-5. He was yet another reason I didn't like the Legion.)
