Only a few years ago I realized that the child singing "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is seeing Daddy dressed up as Santa Claus.

I never caught on to this. Damn.

And it took me a while (and got me laughed at) when I realized the double meaning to Kay Jewelers "Every Kiss Begins with Kay"

When i read that Batrachian was latin for frog-like,it suddenly occurred to me that Batroc The Leaper was a bit of an offensive jab at French people.

The expression "Dutch courage" isn't flattering to Dutch people.

****

They also don't appreciate the term "Dutch treat".
My people aren't too fond of the phrase "Jew the price down".
We should also be careful not to use "Welsh" or "Gyp" when we mean "cheat".

Josh, I grew up a gentile in rural Ohio knowing no Jews directly, but my parents were east coasters and made sure I knew about bigotry & prejudice, including anti-semitism. My freshmen year of college (1992) I was studying with a friend and his girlfriend. She was also from rural Ohio and had an evangelical preacher father. She used the phrase "Jew'd 'em down" and I almost fell out of my chair. I tried to explain to her how incredibly offensive that phrase was but she couldn't grasp it. It really opened my eyes to the "baked-in" anti-semitism that continues to exist today.

Sort-of shoe on the other foot: I had a friend in jr. high whose last name was Sheen. His nickname was Sheeny (remember, no one in our town was Jewish that I know of; he was Asian). I called him that name in front of my mom and she nearly had a heart attack. That was the last time I ever used that word under any circumstance.

I genuinely didn't know that. That's quite shocking!

I realized only in the past year that Marvel's "Evolutionary War" crossover from the 80s was a play on "Revolutionary War."

Don't forget "Dutch cut"

A printing term when trying to get as much out of a sheet of paper as you can.

I cannot say I have ever heard "Jew'ed them down" before yet has now come up twice in the past week in talking about people unconsciously using hurtful terms that was around when growing up.

The only "Dutch" expression I knew of was "going Dutch" which I simply associated both parties paying their own way.
