Glad this thread is still open...I have to share this...
I am putting in a little work today. Made myself some lunch and had the plate sitting on the desk in front of my monitor, slightly to the left.
I had just written an email, sent it, and then proceeded to move my mouse across the screen, to apparently...click on my lunch...to take another bite.
Click. On my lunch.
Duh.

This is a really bad one.
I was reading a book by John Man a few weeks ago about the origin of the alphabet that was entitled Alpha Beta and it wasn't until John Man wrote it in the introduction that I realized that the alphabet took its name from Alpha Beta (the first two letters of the greek alphabet).
Didn't know it, had never heard that, and hadn't pieced it together even when looking at the two separate words written together in order.
Because I'm stupid.

If it's any consolation, I just realized that. Now. Reading your post.

I got "alphabet" almost immediately as a child, tho credit is probably due to my learning the word in the British school system, where echoes of Latin could still be heard. One that took me the longest time was "freelancer." Used it literally for decades before my brain resolved "free lancer" out of it.

I was listening to Mission by ELO from their A New World Record album on headphones last night for probably the hundredth+ time since 1976,and as i listened to the opening line `This is Yerffej Ennyl calling you from planet Earth` i suddenly realised that it`s Jeffrey Lynne backwards! This is strange because as soon as i heard instrumental Fire On High from previous album Face The Music i recognised there was backwards speech at the start! Maybe it`s because my brain just assumed the name was an alien pronunciation like Abin Sur!Jeff Lynne does like to pepper his stuff with hidden nuggets like Morse code etc too. I DID spot in Iron Maiden`s Empire Of The Clouds, which is about the R101 airship disaster, that at 7 minutes they play SOS in Morse code though!

Just because you mentioned it, does everybody realize that Abin Sur was given the same initials as Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern?

ITEM: Eric Jansen, I think that's just a coincidence about Abin Sur and Alan Scott - but I can't imagine it's a "Duh" moment. Who was looking for an homage at that point? If that were the case, they might have tried to cleave a bit closer to the original costume than just the lantern logo (which was still kinda different IIRC.)
ITEM: As a young fogey, I studied Hebrew, and its first two letters - aleph, bet - immediately taught me about what we call our group of letters.
