Just moved myself two months ago (every time I swear it's the last!). Stressful as hell, but I hired movers this time around - and it was definitely worth it.

I'll just add to the "hire movers" chorus.
My family moved when I was 14, didn't hire movers, it was a nightmare. By that point I'd stopped reading comicbooks, just about, and my mother put my boxes of comicbooks in the trash pile. It was by accident that I saved them.
My wife and kids and I moved some eight years ago, hired movers, and it was pretty smooth. Nothing broken except a lamp that *I* busted when my wife insisted it's fragility could not be trusted to the movers. Oh well...

Definitely hire movers.
Moving in once you get to the new place can be a long, drawn-out ordeal, so make sure you stay focused.
We moved last July. Had the entire interior of the new place painted professionally in September. Had 2/3 of the unfinished basement finished to make for more living space in February/March, and last Friday I FINALLY got around to getting the majority of the pictures hung for my wife (we have a LOT of movie prints and posters that we had hung in our 2-story entry way in the old house, and we wanted to do similar in the new house).
Getting those pictures hung was one of the last things we needed to do to really feel like we were finally "moved in," so getting that done was a big relief. The next step was some new furniture for our family room (our current furniture has about 10 year's worth of kid abuse, and it's ready for the basement at this point) -- we just ordered a new couch and chairs over the weekend, so we'll have that box checked-off soon.
Still getting curtains on some of the windows (the house came with mini blinds or blinds on all the windows, and some curtains, but my wife is still in the process of finalizing her choices there).
Anyway, when it comes to the "moving in" part, I'd recommend making sure you have a plan -- figure out what needs to happen for you to feel moved-in, figure out what order things need to happen in, and then set a timeline for yourselves to get those things done.
Hope this helps a bit!
EDITED TO ADD: I'd also recommend checking Angie's List for reputable movers in your area -- that's how we found our moving company, and they were offering a special deal for Angie's List members (something like $350 for 5 hours of moving, which worked out to a pretty good deal). Definitely worth the price of becoming an Angie's List member, and with a new home, you may find yourself needing some plumbers or contractors and such to take care of incidentals that may pop-up over the next year as you get settled in.
Also FWIW, we did do all of our own packing -- we only used the movers to do the actual moving.
U-Haul sells moving boxes cheap, and they will buy back unused boxes, FWIW. Great way to go on that, IMO.
We labeled our moving boxes by room and/or by "owner" (my stuff, my wife's stuff, the kid's stuff, kitchen stuff, stuff for the family room, etc.) using multi-colored duct tape. That made things easy to sort-out once we arrived at the new place, and it made packing a bit more fun -- I got blue duct tape with red Superman "S" emblems on it for my stuff, for example.
:-)

But make sure your moving company gives you a WRITTEN quote. The field is full of sleaze who pack up your stuff and then demand a cheque for double what you thought you were paying before they will unload your possessions.

I have no special words of wisdom to offer for moving. But I know it can be difficult and I can sympathize.
One time when we moved from Massachusetts to New Brunswick the moving company misdirected our items to Alberta. Not sure how that happened. But we were without many items for almost 2 weeks before they got the situation corrected. Luckily I was 17 and I kept my stereo system in my car when we moved. So at least I was able to rock out during the wait!
Hopefully your move goes well. Best of luck with the change too.

We close on our new house tomorrow. Same story as yours. 17 yrs in this house, time for an upgrade.
We are going to rent our current home to our oldest daughter.
We are going to move using the family friends over the course of the next couple of weeks.
We are using this opportunity to get rid of anything that is not a treasured item. It will take longer that way, but we will be happier ultimately.
Congratulations and good luck!

This was 8 years ago....
I was moved by my company, they used a very well known, reputable, national moving company. We got the top of the line package - full packing, shipping, and unpacking. Everything insured. The packing seemed to go very well. The movers were in, had everything boxed and labeled in a matter of hours. They had even brought in a guy to create custom crates for a few larger, fragile, items. I remember telling my wife - "This is great! Why haven't we used movers in the past?"
When boxing was complete, they started loading the truck. After an hour or so, they take a break, a couple of the guys are smokers - but they're very polite about it and they make sure they are far away from the house so as not to bug anyone with smoke. I don't remember it being a particularly windy day, but a breeze can come along at any time, right? About 45 minutes later, one of the movers comes *running* out of the house - nothing in his hands. That's odd. I look to see where he's going, and there's smoke pouring out of the moving van! The guy rushes in and pulls out one of our couch cushions - not on fire, but smoldering. A couple hours later and everything could have gone up in flames. The manager apologized profusely, they filed the paperwork, and they ended up replacing the whole couch later.
Well, we thought, that was fun. Good thing they caught it early. Dodged a bullet. There's our disaster for the move, it should all be smooth sailing from here.
And it was, until move-in day. Movers arrived on time and promptly started unloading the boxes into the appropriate rooms. I'm at work, my wife is "supervising" the move, we touch base in the morning and she says it's all going very well. She has to run some errands (all of those things you have to do when you move to a new home), the movers say "no problem", they have several hours more work to do.
She comes home a couple hours later to this...
She calls me, in tears, "I'm just sitting on the front porch. I don't even know where to begin."
I email my company contact first, send him some pictures, and ask if this is normal. The guy calls me back immediately and says absolutely not (I would hope not!) and he's going to contact the moving company.
The next morning a new team arrives from a couple hundred miles away. They apologize profusely. They help my wife in getting things organized and did everything they could to make things right, but I will never let a mover unpack my stuff again.

I always use moving as an opportunity to downsize and clear the clutter. The last time I moved, I probably threw away/donated more stuff than I took with me.

Last time I moved it was into my house (10 years on June 5th, 2005).
I rented and drove the moving truck which was about 25 feet long. That alone was an adventure.
Now, what helped with the stress is that family was helping and half were male and the other half female.
The males did the heavy lifting and the females did the assembling and unpacking. My wife was the headmaster: "this goes in the bedroom" "That goes in the kitchen", etc.
So that, the only boxed items left after I returned the truck were my books. They're still unpacked, by the way.
The big secret is just that, assemble, unpack, and store away immediately as items get into the house. An even bigger secret is involving as many females as males. If the move had been carried out by an all-male team, 95% of my stuff would still be in boxes, not just my books.
And the first thing I would have unpacked would have been the beer!!!

Mark the boxes containing your phone(s) and the boxes containing your silverware. A few moves ago I did not and it became impossible to eat much of any food we had OR to order delivery pizza / Chinese the day we moved, and we were quite hungry.
