I do think you could see the love in Buscema's Conan work, but as JB said, there wasn't a hint of condescension in his Avengers work. I loved his Avengers work and would put it in my top five Avengers art along with the other greats like JB, Perez, Kirby, and Neal Adams.

I thought the Stern/Buscema work on Avengers was on a par with the very best stuff ever seen in that title.

I agree with you guys. That Stern/Buscema/Palmer run of Avengers was a high point on that series for me. One of those nigh perfect 80's comics runs like Byrne's Fantastic Four (which got me back into comics in my teens) and Alpha Flight. I'd put that run up there with the much shorter Michelinie/Byrne Avengers run from my childhood that got me completely hooked on comics in the first place.

i disagree...plus you WRITE, some of the best stories ever written in comics. sure Buscema is a master, but not everything he did was flawless.

Can we agree that regardless of whether the Avengers etc was J Buscema's best work, he drew everyone on model and all were instantly rercognisable for who they were supposed to be.

And the panels were dramatic.

And the art was gorgeous.

I think there were artists who could draw more characters more ideally than John Buscema. Not many! They just naturally, to me, had a wider range. Which is not to say Buscema was extremely limited -- I'm talking about comicbook artists who exhibited virtually super-human range, like Romita and Perez.

That's but one scale. Even Neal Adams couldn't do it all.

But... Big John... when he was ideal, which was about as often as any other artist could ever dream of... his work was breathtakingly awesome.

im curious what you think was a miss of yours?
obviously every comic artist has a spectrum, affected by many variables.
Whatever you've done that i think isnt up to par, i can usually blame on the inker. for instance, i just finished finally reading all the X-men Hidden Years, and i didnt really care for Tom Palmer's inks (never have) though i know you like his style. nothing beats you inking you in my book.
oh and since im thread-drifting here:
that Quitely White Queen is horrible - so she's an asian teen who's pouting cuz Prof X stopped giving her an allowance?  lame.

Did he ever draw any DC characters outside of that "Superman/Spider-Man" team up?

There were plans for John Buscema to do an Elseworlds tale for DC with the JLA set in King Arthur's time.(iirc)

I know he did a few layouts of the characters.
