I've never fully understood the ins and outs of the difference between zip-a-tone and duo-shade, but loved your duo-shade stuff on Namor, JB.

••

Zip-a-tone is/was a self-adhesive plastic film that was pasted onto the art and trimmed to shape.* Duo-Shade is/was a pattern printed into the boards themselves, made visible by painting with special chemicals.

___________________

* Zip, while it produced some good effects, could be a nightmare to work with. As I used to say, back in the day, one could press and buff down the zip as much as humanly possible, yet the sweep of a hand could dislodge it. Perversely, if, when applying it, one happened to touch it to the board in the wrong place, it would instantly bond on a molecular level, making moving it impossible without tearing the paper.

Color holds are the technique used on the background images in DC's "Who's Who"?

Yes. When the line is "held" in color, it's a color hold.

With the advent of computer coloring, a lot of colorists have gone quite mad with color holds. Clouds, fire, ice, reflections -- anything and everything gets knocked back with color holds, even when doing so weakens the dramatic impact of the line!!!

Seeing that Bob Wiacek-inked Hulk splash reminds me how closely his style sometimes matched JB's. There are pages where my eye is fooled into thinking Wiacek's inks were really JB's. There are very few inkers in that category.

Thanks for the explanation, JB! I think my reader's mind has over the years been befuddled by the fact they looked the same -- i.e. from my armchair perspective they were the same in the aspect that affected me.

From the perspective of the artist, I can now see just how different the two are. Duo-shade sounds a lot more user-friendly!

Nowadays those effects are usually done in the computer. Manga artists (who work mostly in B&W) love them.

Yes. My understanding is that the traditional materials have pretty much disappeared. Tom Palmer actually makes his own zip now, and I've even done it myself a couple of times, to create a specific effect.

So... disappointed fans who won't find most of those characters in the book!

Look at this lamp! Look at this lamp! Look at this LAMP!

Geez, so much fascination with photoshop they forget there is something more important on the page.
