Though I had a lukewarm first impression of Garcia Lopez's work on that small handful of issues immediately after Perez departed the New Teen Titans baxter series, largely due to Romeo Thangal's anemic inks, I just saw an issue of Jose's DEADMAN series from the 1980s and was quite impressed with it. Could some of my fellow board members recommend what they consider his best work? What genres does he do best? Any favorite runs? Is he his own best inker? Thanks!

Usually my first exposure to an artist is my favorite, even though they may go on to become a better artist. With that in mind, I'm going to say that Atari Force is some of the best art work put out by Garcia Lopez. Those issues just pop into my mind automatically. Looking forward to his team up with GP and PJ on the Donna Troy mini.

I thought his Batman VS the Hulk was great stuff.
Once again, does anyone know why he didn't want to do any work for Marvel what was his reasons?

TWILIGHT -- tho I did not care much for the "reimaging" of DC's Silver Age space characters, the artwork was superb.

I think ATARI FORCE is underrated, and awesome. Also, his first few issues of the second volume of New Teen Titans are stellar, plus they have naked Greek Goddesses. Can't go wrong there. ;)

My mind keeps on jumping back to Superman, although that's probably because of all the licensing art he did for the character. In any event, a fine and very underrated artist.

Lopez and Aparo are to DC as Romitas Jr and Sr are to Marvel. I think it's
a safe bet to assume that company loyalty is at least partially involved.

Besides Twilight, I would say he did his best work on Cinder &
Ashe, Superman:Kal and the Dr. Strangefate issue of Amalgam.
Here are a few more gems for you Batman #353, Brave and Bold #171, DC
Comics Presents #31 and 41 and Jonah Hex #1-3.
I liked when Dick Giordano and Joe Rubinstein inked him but nobody
does as good a job as Lopez himself.
As to why he never worked for Marvel here is a quote from an interview
he did with Newsarama.
"NRAMA: Throughout your career, you never really strayed far from DC.
Why is that?
JLGL: I started working with DC in 1975, the same year I did about six
stories for Western Publishing, but I couldn't handle both things -
remember, I’m slow. I'm privileged to say that I've always got offers from
other companies, but I always felt good with DC’s people. They keep me
busy and happy. To change one superhero for another wasn’t worth it."
He did do a Wonder Man illustration for the deluxe version of the Marvel
Universe Handbook.

I have to say that the rare times he did interiors
on the Superman books in the &0's are among my favorites. One
particular issue, has Superman flying/dancing in the sky with Lois,
which is particularly nice (doesn't JB own that page? I thought I saw
it here on the board). His Superman was the perfect blend of a more
modern comics drawing approach coupled with a traditional depiction of
the character. In his hands, Superman was young and vital, and
obviously very powerful and graceful.

I agree, the Atari Force work is great. The covers to issues 2 and 4 were awesome.
