The Associated Press is reporting that a father accidentally shot and killed his
14-year-old son yesterday. The two were at a Florida gun range.

What the fuck is wrong with people?!!!

It's bad enough hearing about shooters in shops, but how many more accidental shootings are there going to be before these morons stop the obsession with guns?

Sorry, but how many accidental shootings is that now? Had that guy not had a gun, chances are his son would be alive now.

I know, the pro-gun lobby will come out with shit like, "Yeah, but the father may have crashed a car or dropped a TV on his son by accident." Missing the point.

Guns sure as hell didn't protect this family:

The other day there was a news item about a father who accidentally shot his young son. The father immediately proclaimed that the fault was his, not the gun's!

I wonder what the odds would have been of the kid being killed if they'd been playing baseball instead of firing weapons created to kill things.

Of course it's his fault. We wouldn't want anything to happen to his precious firearms.

The FBI collects and releases that data yearly. The only group I've heard of that's been blocked from collecting it is the CDC, which I don't disagree with. I have a really hard time seeing anything the CDC can do with guns as (as has been pointed out a few times) it's an object only designed for destroying what's in it's path. By design, making it "safer" would mean removing it's intent. Also the Director of the CDC has publicly stated many times that he wants to remove all guns from the world, to me that removes the objectivity a study like that would need.
------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------
The FBI collects and releases gun data, which is different than what the CDC would do with it. The FBI just reports statistics - while helpful in analysis, statistics are just a part of research. The CDC is a scientific organization and was doing different kinds of analysis and funding the research of others. The scientific analysis that was being done was giving answers that the NRA didn't like so the NRA brought pressure on Congress. Congress in turn told the CDC to stop researching or funding research into gun violence or the CDC's funding would be cut. The CDC research looked at correlations and causes of gun violence (and a lot more), not just number of gun deaths stats. The only way we can make truly fact-based decisions on how to approach handling gun violence is to perform research on the topic and the CDC and other scientific organizations are best equipped to do this.

Further, the CDC's directors personal opinion is irrelevant. Research, when properly done and peer reviewed, is specifically designed to weed out researcher bias. The scientific process exists because we know that all people are biased and make mistakes so it is designed to minimize them.

Gotta hand it to the NRA. Brilliant way to make our societal problems disappear: force people to stop studying them!

It appears the NRA has an app:

Look at the rankings you can get if you download the app. One of the rankings is 'patriot'. So are they saying those who aren't pro-Second Amendment are not patriots?

They wrap themselves in the flag in order to deflect criticism. Pretty old trick but it still works.

As Samuel Johnson put it, "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."

Almost feels like a game to them, i.e. the more you interact with the app, the higher your rankings. That feels very wrong.
