Sub-Mariner- The Invaders
—
Agreed! Most people don't seem to realize just how powerful the Sub-Mariner really is.
Speaking of my favorite mutant… Since JB made Captain America the Sub- Mariner's probation officer in the pages of Namor, the Sub-Mariner, I've often thought of the resulting battle should Cap attempt to bring the Atlantean in against his will. Captain America has been called the world's greatest human fighting machine, but Namor is no mere human. I know Steve Rogers is riding a wave of popularity right now, but I'd give the win to Mr. McKenzie.

Mr. Byrne is my favourite teacher at Byrnerobotics University. He's tough, but fair.

Will do, Mr. Byrne. (It will take a while though. I don't have my Essentials volumes here with me.)

But they're Essential, Wallace. It says so right on the cover. Why would you ever be without them?

The thing about the power magnification Sue has undergone is that she's become Green Lantern with none of the drawbacks, including visibility of her constructs. And since her force fields are essentially psionic manifestations, how much more will she eventually learn to do with them? Are their only limits those of her imagination? If she could conceive a field big enough to encircle the globe, would it come into existence? Could she then contract it and crush the Earth? Could she imagine a field to encompass the galaxy? If she understood Galactus and everything that comprised him, could she create an invisible Galactus? Could she create a thousand of them? There's a lot a ground yet to cover with Sue, should folks wish to do so...

"The full extent of the Surfer's Power Cosmic abilities I believe are on par with Dr. Strange's mystical powers."

Yes, I had a tough time deciding between them, for sure. I just feel that sorcery, especially at Strange's level, kinda trumps all. He'd definitely be a tough character to write, I think.

The Avengers - Thor? Or Scarlet Witch?
Once again run into the issue that any team with a super speedster, who is using his powers to best effect, is pretty obviously set with a most powerful member. Kinda the same with a high power long range power (e.g., a power ring or heat vision.) Yes, Batman blah blah blah because he's Batman - but Green Lantern still takes him out. From orbit.

Some great answers here--thanks, everyone!
Under JB's authorship, Sue took the lead as the most powerful member of the FF, certainly. Thinking it through, he showed us what Sue was truly capable of--and when you see that, it's "oh my gosh, how did we miss that?" It's a great bit of character work that didn't require some massive increase in her existing powers to make happen.
Professor X is DEFINITELY the most powerful of the X-Men, though as Jean regained her telepathy, she gave him a run for the money even before Phoenix.
I'd argue Scarlet Witch might outdo Thor, but you could make an argument either way.
For the Defenders, that's an interesting question: Dr. Strange or Silver Surfer? Hm. I see nobody named Nighthawk! ;)

And Eric, I agree--you could make a good argument for Flash being the most powerful of the Justice League, considering all the permutations of his basic power set. Even Superman would be hard-pressed to defeat Barry if he was going all out.
