f I remember correctly it was Sal who first started drawing the Hulk with the purple swimming trunk bottoms similar to the blue ones the Abomination always wore.

------------------------------------
Jack Kirby introduced the trunks on the Hulk way, way back in issue #4 of the Hulk's original series (which were first colored blue).  Then shifted to purple for issues #5 and 6.  Which carried on into FF #12, and the first couple issues of the Avengers.
They were re-introduced during the Banner-in-control era with Mantlo...in issue #279...which sadly wasn't drawn by Sal.

Favortie Sal runs:

CAPTAIN AMERICA, written by Steve Englehart
DEFENDERS, written by Steve Gerber, especially the issues inked by Klaus Janson
THE INCREDIBLE HULK, written by Len Wein
CAPTAIN AMERICA, written by Roger McKenzie
THE INCREDIBLE HULK, written by Bill Mantlo
ROM, written by Bill Mantlo
AVENGERS, any issue
SPIDER-MAN, any issue of his in SPECTACULAR or MARVEL TEAM-UP
SON OF SATAN, written by Steve Gerber (just a few issues, but Sal OWNED it!), some nice inking by Bob McLeod

Gee, those are literally HUNDREDS of issues I loved!

Did you not care for the Hulk run written by Roger Stern, Eric?  i thought there were some classic stories in there too, especially the crossover with Captain America (Sal drew both titles for that storyline).

After disliking Sal's work as a kid--it shames me nowadays that I had the gall not to like his Hulk--I later came to love his stuff. His work has a dynamism that sometimes approaches Kirby levels, and his storytelling ability is, for my money, right up there with anybody's.

As a Captain America fan, I treasure Sal's run on the book in the seventies. His Hulk is now the definitive version for me, but his Cap is also a very close second to Jack's.

"I grew up on Sal's art with a Captain America book and
record being my gateway drug. Since then, I've read
thousands of pages of comics drawn by him."

**

And A Phoenix Shall Arise! I can still hear the title
being read, all these years later.

I love Sal's art. There's only one comic artist I like more (which is why I'm on this board).

My first image of the Hulk in the pages of comic book was this:

My 6-year-old eyes and mind imprinted on that style, so that's how the Hulk was "supposed" to look. And comics, too, for that matter!

The Incredible Hulk, The Defenders, Marvel Team-Up, Peter Parker - The Spectacular Spider-Man, Captain America...solid stuff.

I really enjoyed when he did his own inks. The Incredible Hulk issues from #240 to #273 (Hulk and Sasquatch and Wendigo!) really shine. The work he did on Thor (with Simonson writing) was top notch.

I ordered a commission from him a couple of years ago, requesting a classic, raging Hulk. He did not disappoint:

I came across some examples of Sal's self-inked work recently that completely changed my opinion of his work. It felt like a great many of his inkers sapped the vitality from his work which had a slightly spiky, kinetic quality under his own inks.

I really loved Joe Staton's inking over Sal Buscema's pencils!

Hey Darin!  (The one person on this forum who I've actually met in person!)  Actually, I LOVED the Roger Stern run on INCREDIBLE HULK!  It was one of my favorites!  I was just going off the top of my head--I probably left off one or two more worthies!  I am eagerly waiting for Marvel to reprint ALL of Sal's HULK stuff!

Does anyone draw the open-mouthed shout/scream/roar better than Sal? Not likely!

I love that scream too, Greg! The crazier the expression, the better.

And I probably should've guessed you left that Stern run out accidentally, Eric. Those Bronze Age writers were so good at telling sophisticated stories with complex emotional stuff while still entertaining pre-teens like me circa 1979.  The latter task was helped immensely by artists like Sal (and JB of course).

Hope to see you at SDCC again this year, Eric!
