What I love about Frazetta's black and white work is that it is so good it doesn't need colors. And even if you do color them, flats would look awesome.

All the lighting is handled by the blacks. No need for additional lighting done by a colorist too.

My art is just the opposite - it looks better colored - because the colors help to hide my lack of skill.

Photoshop coloring is fine when it isn't overdone, but Photoshop coloring on pencils and skipping the whole inking process looks terrible to my eyes 99% of the time. I really wish that whole thing would go away completely. It does seem that it's not being used as much as Marvel was doing it a few years back.

I miss the yellow newsprint!  I also loved the watercolors(?) on the white paper of the old Marvel magazines.  Today's glossy colors on glossy paper are often WAY too much!  The best Photoshop coloring is when it's understated like on HELLBOY or the numerous Brubaker/Philipps books.

This is how you colour comics - done by a fan "David"…

••

I'm a big fan of flat color, as most here know, but so many modern artists depend far too much on the colorist to actually finish the job. With flat color, the printed pages would look like coloring books.

(Every so often, weary of my work being handed over to some Photoshop wizard for coloring, I would "surrender" and ink an issue with minimal blacks. Of course, THAT would be when they'd give me flat color!)

JB, do you remember any issues that you felt the coloring was just right for your work?
