As noted, Terry is absolutely convinced he had nothing to do with this piece, which is what raises the red flags about everything else.

Just an observation: including Cyclops in that version of the X-men strikes me as a bit odd as he was destined to be "banished" by thenand not part of that team.Question for JB - any recollection of how you specifically designed the new brown costume for Wolverine? If it was done while you were drawing #139 this drawing would have had to be done after that.

••

This drawing, if I did it, would have to have been done sometime before March 14th, 1980. That was the day I quit UNCANNY X-MEN*, and I declined (courteously) to do any X-Men drawings for a long, long time after that.

_______________

* I remember the date because it was the day I quit UNCANNY X-MEN.

(Actually that date has had an occasional recurrence in my family history, and coincidentally it was the day I quite.)

Hmm, why are Angel's wings unfinished? That seems weird...

Never seen this before. If I was told it was by you I
would say that you inked it. Those inks look more like
you than Terry. Of course that raises the issue as to
why Terry's signature is on it.

The background head is kind of similar to the full page
splash from his origin issue and the appearance of
unfinished wings could be the fading of marker over the
years.

The markers I used at that vintage did not fade, they turned red.

And, anyway, the piece does not look like it was inked with markers.

Is it a copy and paste job? While the X-Men resemble J.B.`s work, the Xavier head looks to be in the style of Pat Broderick.

While this is more of the unrequested speculation end of things, I would say Xavier's head doesn't look like it was drawn by a professional. Not only is its placement with the figures in front a messy composition, but there also appears to be an ear below Storm's cloak -- where an ear would never be, and the whole head is horribly squished.

JB, I think it's 100% fake.  I am not finding anything online to match it.  And the thing that has me really questioning it is the way the shadows fall.  They look off.  Finally, if Terry Austin says he didn't do it and you're not recalling it, that, to me, means it's definitely a fake.

Could it have been art for the X-men Chronicles by FantaCo? I don't own a copy, but I have the FF issue with JB cover.

Greg, the X-Men Chronicles has a Dave Cockrum cover.

I'll admit there is something in me that hopes that, if I drew this, even in 1980, it would have been BETTER!

On the other hand, the signature, which forgers usually get wrong, is spot on -- tho oddly placed.
