Doctor Strange (vol. 2) 10-13.  The Earth was destroyed because Nightmare tapped into Eternity's dreams.  Eternity's dreams are our reality. After some convincing by Strange and the Ancient One, Eternity recreated Earth exactly as it was. He(?) is the universe after all.

Thanks Phillip.

So all the Marvel characters now are recreations of dead characters. Eerie...

Sise-Neg went back before the Big Bang (along with Dr. Strange and Baron Mordo) and recreated the universe.

The Beyonder created a brand new universe that, I believe, was supposed to be the incarnation of the Marvel Universe.

Solar, Man of the Atom, created or recreated the Valiant universe if I'm remembering the story right.

Superman has gone past the end of time at least twice - after everyone had died - and history recreated the DCU EXACTLY.

Apparently, the DCU was also created by Dr. Manhattan.

And of course, the DCU was recreated during the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

I think we can all agree that everyone has probably died and been reborn - WHOLESALE. If we consider each death individually, or even specific ones, then we find that this gimmick is already tired and has been done sufficiently.

And again - if you're going to effect enough change to kill a character, why not change the character instead, and see how that character interacts with their environment? Surely, that's been done - but Steve Rogers always becomes Cap again, Clark Kent regains his powers, etc., and there are interesting stories to tell without getting rid of a character that every knows must come back.

Dan Slott's She-Hulk used something like this as an argument to allow a ghost to testify at trial legally. She pointed out that Thanos had, with a snap of his Infinity Gauntleted fingers, killed half the living things in existence, and that later, they were all brought back again. How many people in the room remember being killed that day? The hands of about half the people in the room go up...

Shooter insisted that the general public knew virtually nothing of the strange and crazy things going on around them. It was a frustrating rule under which to labor, but it was preferable to this kind of fannish navel-gazing.
