Stephen, that's rough. I'm sorry about your books and possessions, but glad that you're okay.
I have a swath of doubles, and some books that I'm not going to read again, nor sell, and if you were to provide an address, I'd be glad to contribute to your re-establishing your collection. Of course, you'll have to actually get your address back before we send stuff.
The slight silver lining to this is that a lot of books have been reprinted in collections, so that may help you reassemble the stories, if not the books themselves.

GAH! At least what happened to Stephen was a natural disaster. But to toss out books and comicbooks, why, that's un-natural!

Exactly. Not to mention punishing the son for your failed relationship with his father.

Sorry to hear this, man this is one of my worst nightmares.I had flooding in my basement were I store my comics a few years ago but we only had a few inches and luckily I had them stored on pallets that kept them 6 inches or so off the floor and they were saved. My heart goes out to you sir.

Losing most of the books I could deal with, some are close to irreplaceable. But that's how it goes. Losing the autographed ones really hurt. Not that I was ever looking to sell them, but.they were memories. Ive been lucky in my convention travels, having met a host of amazing professionals: John Byrne, Neal Adams, Alan Davis, Bernie Wrightson, Mike Zeck, Mike Kaluta, Ron Garney, Mark Waid, Alex Ross, John Romita Jr. Losing those hurt. But still I've only spotlighted the comics but it was everything. Refrigerator, TV's, couches, chairs, tables, beds, cars.
And I'm lucky. I've got a great support system of friends and family. Others have had it worse. There are people still living in shelters 2 weeks after the water came in.
I appreciate the help offered, but if you can, donate, to the relief effort. I'll be fine, I'm just angry that the rest of the nation doesn't know how bad this was. A hurricane hits Jersey and celebrities throw an on air telethon. This has been glossed over from what I've seen. Again, 61,000 homes took water. That's 61,000 families displaced.

I'm sorry to hear this, Stephen. We've donated to the relief and been acutely aware of it because I consider Louisiana a second home (I'm from SC but go back to New Orleans and the surrounding areas at least once a year).
As much as I'd like to think I'm Tyler Durden "its all just stuff" about possessions, there is something irreplaceable about the comics I acquired during my childhood. It's like my own version of a scrapbook. Anything after 1996 -- when I graduated college -- I would just buy again if I wanted it and had the resources through insurance, but the dozen or so years prior.... those books are priceless. I can just open one of them and I'm suddenly the 13 yr old excited to have found TWO of JB's WORLD OF METROPOLIS miniseries at a 7-11 while my father was filling up the tank during our summer trip to Florida. They kept me company for the rest of the drive.

While I have not suffered what you have gone through, and you truly have my sympathies for that, I have recently come to an epiphany re comic collecting, specifically, Marvel.
And that is, for $10 per month, I can read pretty much read any Marvel comic I want. I've made the first leap in to this. Am now mentally working through the next part which will be to look at selling most of my back issues.
Might be something to consider?

If there is a bright side to this sad story, it's the return of the thrill of the hunt ! I miss the days I was chasing my missing Byrne issues all around the comic shops then all around the internet. Good hunt to you fellow addict !

Stephen - so sorry to hear of the loss of your comics and other possessions. I just recently saw a short video of someone riding through one of the Baton Rouge neighborhoods and in front of each house is a huge pile of lost belongings. It was beyond belief. I hope for the best for you and everyone affected in the area.
