At the time a decapitation scene was pretty over the top, thus very impactful.
Flipping through recent Marvel comics and it seems like decapitations are as common as someone throwing a punch!
++++++++++++++++ The reason I picked that scene is because it is tastefully done, and you don't have to see what's happening to know what is happening. (If it was done in a comic today, by a different artist, I shudder to think what would be shown.) The only other decapitation scene I remember in comics when I was younger was during George Perez's run on Wonder Woman, and while you did see it, it was done in shadow. (Diana decapitated an evil god with her thrown tiara)
My major gripe about comics now is that blood and gore has become too acceptable. Just go look at when Ares was ripped in half by Sentry, for an example. DC is guilty of it, too, not just Marvel, though.
Brian Peck, that's a great choice for a John Buscema piece!
