Goblin flies towards Spider-Man. Spider-Man swings fist in downward arc. Is it possible that the angle throws the incoming Goblin upward?

I say yes, depending on what angle the goblin comes in at and how the contact is made with Spider-Man's fist.

Surely it's as much an issue of the angle of the contact between Spider-Man and the Goblin as it is of the swing-plane of the fist?

••

Nope. Consider this:

The top image is as Gil drew the punch, rotated so that our view is at right angles to Spider-Man's swing.

The second image is the result that swing/punch would actually produce.

Problem is, the Goblin Flyer and its trail show us that Spider-Man and the Goblin are in a straight line with each other. If the Goblin was coming in at an angle, it might be possible to say Spider-Man's punch was throwing him back and to the side, which could create the image seen. But, no such luck.

Like I sad, I've made this mistake myself (as have plenty of others), so I know whereof I speak.

I'm just too used to seeing this mistake all throughout my comicbook reading days because it looks good to me.

Tangent: I would happily read a comicbook featuring nothing but JB's doodles!

The Buscemas were masters of the powerful punch.

I was reading through this thread at my desktop and had to contribute my first JB commission of the Hulk putting Superman into orbit on my wall next to my desktop. Super Punch indeed!

How can we not mention perhaps the most powerful punch - at the time - from FF #242... Galactus may have been weakened but still and impressive visual:

Earlier in the issue, Ben proves he can take a good punch too!

Regarding that first panel... what kind of a monster is Reed Richards that he could EVER call his best friend "Thing"? Ben's identity wasn't a secret, so there's no reason to use that excuse. Reed and Ben went to college together, were friends throughout the war (even if not in the same battles), and Reed trusted Ben enough to ask him to fly his rocket to outer space. There's not a lot of ambiguity about their fraternal relationship.

But he still calls him "Thing." I expect that from Johnny. From Reed, it's totally disrespectful and more than a little puzzling.

Best you take that up with Stan Lee.
