Michael, I'm all for early voting and anything else that will allow legitimate voters to vote.
Kevin, I'm also against gerrymandering. I think it is BS. But that is not as easily fixed as just giving somebody a free ID.

Wow. Yes, it has nothing to do with money. But it has every thing to do with access. When Alabama closes all but two places where people can get Voter ID cards, when available times to get a card are during the time when most normal people work and those people have to decide whether to be paid or get an ID card, you're incredibly naive or purposely obtuse to simply say that the government is just handing out ID cards for free. Please. I have to believe you're smarter than that. If not, then shame on you.

And, at the end of the day, don't suck us into the idea that there already is widespread voter fraud. There just isn't. Hasn't been. Won't be. It's a tactic played by Trump to shore up support that if he loses, it's only because Hillary and her cronies rigged the election. That's the side you're playing, John.

As someone who's had to deal with renewing both a Driver's License and a passport lately, I'll point out that something as simple as lack of Internet access makes both figuring out what is required to get those items and actually getting those items 10 times harder.
When I was at the DMV, the computer system went down for hours, so even with an appointment, I had to leave and come back. If I relied on public transportation, had a job with strict hours, or had no internet to check if the system was up again, I would have been screwed.
Free state IDs do no good if they make residents jump through a lot of hoops to get them.

Matt, they have plenty of time. There is four years between elections.
If they won't make the slightest effort then I have no sympathy at all.

Oh, I see. Plenty of time to get to a Voter ID. So you're one of those. One who has no sympathy for people who can't take an hour or more off AT ANY TIME to get a bullshit ID card just to vote. Whereas it's only taken me AT MOST my driver's license and, once, a bill with my current address to vote. So you see no issue with people who are "less than you" having to jump through hoops and drive the extra mile just to vote.
Fuck you.

I have to say, most times here in SoCal, all I have to do is tell the person where I live and give them my name and I can vote. No ID. No driver's license. No anything at all to prove who I am. And I vote. And still, there's no evidence AT ALL of any widespread voter fraud in any state in the union.
It's a media story. It's most definitely a Republican story because they're the ones most affected by people who can't get a Voter ID card. No matter the hay John wants to sling at you, it's all about access and limiting that access so that people of lesser means won't or simply can't get the card they need just to vote. It's easy to say it's four years between elections, but when you're faced with putting food on the table every day and thinking about an election, which one takes precedence? That's obvious, right? That's something all but the priveliged can agree upon, no? And by privileged I don't mean the rich, I also mean just the middle class. But Voter ID laws target the poor. Those who can't make that decision. So, yeah, fuck you if you don't have sympathy for people who can't take two hours off of work to get an ID because they're hourly and depend on that $20 to feed their family that week.

As a foreigner, I still get confused about this argument. Can I show up and get food stamps and welfare cheques without ID? People keep on talking about the very poor don't have ID but does this mean they don't use any government services? And if they have ID for government services, they can't use this ID to register to vote? Is a voter ID card something that can only be used to vote?
