My answer to whether I prefer a fill-in to nothing is thus: one of the MAJOR reasons I was driven away from comics was the trend (that started with Image, but bled into the big two) of months long waiting between issues. In my literal decades of reading comics, I had *never* heard of such a thing.

Trouble is,who of Marvel or DC does single issue stories nowadays?
***
This is a good point. For those who have only been writing comics since the "decompression era", would they be conditioned to be able to write standalone stories? Would they want to? I'm sure they have the talent, but it's more of a question of willingness.

Sadly it seems like no one outside of maybe the all-ages titles that they produce or have produced like Superman Adventures, Scooby Doo, the kid-friendly Avengers and Spider-Man comics from Marvel, etc.
But if you want to veer outside of Marvel and DC a bit, might I suggest the aforementioned Groo title currently being produced at Dark Horse? Even when Sergio and Mark do multi-part stories and mini-series, each tale is still a stand-alone story.
Edit: Also as the self-proclaimed fastest comic in the artist in the world (and likely not hyperbole if you've ever seen him draw) you never have to worry about Mr. Aragones missing a deadline. :D

Issues of Stan Sakai's USAGI YOJIMBO often feature self-contained stories, even when they are part of multi-issue arcs.

And they're really great too, Wallace. I highly recommend this series. Dark Horse started releasing some thick collections of this as the Usagi Yojimbo Saga a few years ago and they're inexpensive and over 600 pages! Pretty sure Stan Sakai has also lettered almost all of the nigh 200 issues of Groo as well.

Sorry JW, I'll continue to view BWS's Xmen issues more like special issues featuring a prestigious guest artist rather than scrapping the barrel fill ins.

It's hard to think back and realize X-MEN was in such a mess that there were TWO fill-ins bracketing my arrival on the title.

I know Dave was very slow, but it's couldn't have been ALL his fault!!* _____________ * One editor used to say that Dave would get 2/3rds of a job done in whatever time you gave him. Give him three months to do 99 pages, and you'd get 66. Give him a year to do 3, and you'd get 2. Humorous, but not entirely fair!

Since DC REBIRTH began, DC has been publishing many more one-part and two-part stories. This is a very good thing. I have no idea if Marvel is doing this, as I gave up on Marvel a long time ago and only returned to DC since last summer.

Adam, is that in certain titles or imprints? I don't meant to doubt you, but when I glance at something like "Previews", I see multi-issue stories in the likes of ALL-STAR BATMAN and TRINITY.
