Wallace, the first costume is a bit of a hotch potch of various `British` things like the Union Flag, the lion rampant,it looks ok,but Davis` design works so much better.I`m not so keen on later versions like the one with black diamond shapes on the shoulders, which i have no idea what purpose they serve?

I don’t think I have any particular preference for the first version of a character’s costume that I saw. I can think of a number of characters for whom I prefer a later costume. - Green Lantern: I prefer Guy Gardner’s jacket costume over Hal’s costume (blasphemy!)
- Batman: I strongly prefer Batman’s original costume (as seen in the 1939 chapter of Generations)
- Aurora: her gold costume.
- Thing: when JB took him back to his original look
- Hulk: grey and surly looking (but not Mr. Fixit)
- Iron Man: the original bulky grey armor
- Colossus: there was a costume that I think Art Adams created for him with a thick black vertical stripe down the middle and yellow piping on a red background
- Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Girl (and She-Hulk): the negative zone reversed versions of their costumes

I go back and forth between preferring those uniforms and the classic blue and black ones.

Re Captain Britain, I think Alan Davis had to redesign his design due to colourists struggling with the chest and hat areas. I could be wrong though

"I always liked the black-and-white Spider-Man costume. Still do. I just didn't like the idea of it replacing the traditional Spider-Man costume. "
--
There was a brief period where Spider-Man would wear his original costume during the day, and the black costume at night (was it ever stated as such that that's exactly what he was doing? Not sure. But there were issues where he would arbitrarily switch costumes between pages). I thought that was the PERFECT way to keep everyone happy, and it felt like something a young guy like Peter Parker would do.

Yeah, I remember that time fondly. It wasn't so much a day/night time thing as Peter just randomly switching them out depending on which one was in the wash. (Amusingly it drove J.Jonah Jameson nuts in one issue, as he kept trying to believe that there had to be a sinister ulterior motive to it!)
I suppose it's possible though that some of the artists might have favoured using it in the darker night time tales thinking it was more appropriate?
And yeah, I like the Black and White costume too. I really wish we could have had one of the movies use it properly. (Rather than that gray version of the traditional outfit in Raimi's film.)

Also it is kinda neatly appropriate that we're discussing this on the John Byrne forum. As to me the the Negative zone Reversed Fantastic Four outfits and the Brown Wolverine outfit are easily their best looks. To the extent that I used to always change the outfits to those, when playing the original Marvel Ultimate Alliance game.
I also really preferred the 80es Hercules outfit as well.

James,i read something along those lines too,why couldn`t the colourists just do their job,is the Union Flag THAT hard to colour? Still doesn`t explain the black diamond shapes on the shoulders though!

Not sure. •• And then there's the costume Dick wears when Bruce is injured. . . . I wish people would get it into their heads that Spider-Man is not Batman. Multiple costumes, multiple gadgets. That's not really what the character is about.

The Atom also always looked "bald" to me too when I first encountered him (and for many years after that). When Gil Kane redesigned him for THE SWORD OF THE ATOM--simply by adding some battle accessories and opening up the top of his mask--I thought that was brilliant. That should have gone on for much longer than it did.•• Ah, SWORD OF THE ATOM. Let's take a character whose unique feature is that he can shrink to tiny size and put him into a world where everybody is that size naturally. Around the same time a writer at Marvel was talking about wanting to do an Iceman miniseries in which he's on an ice-world. sigh Even the more recent ATOM series on which I was Art Robot made the same mistake.

What I hate is the recent trend to make costumes look too detailed. I'm surprised some comics aren't delayed because it takes longer to draw the main characters.
Most of Iron Man's armors since the Force Works era suit, the Flash's current costume, Wonder Woman's recent outfits, etc.
My preferences for certain characters:
The Fantasic Four's Negative Zone reversed outfits.
Batman's costume with just a black bat on the chest.
Iron Man: The classic red and gold, with the red and silver armor as a close second.
Black Canary: the original.
The Flash: Jay Garrick.
Zatanna: The `bug on a head', as Blue Devil called it, look.
