Robbie, the Madeline McCann case is ample proof.I too
looked after my nephew when he was younger,we took him
on holiday often,i made sure he always held my hand when
crossing the road, and when he was about 10,we were on
holiday in Devon when Wolves were in the play off`s for
promotion to The Premiership,i took him to the local pub
that was televising the game(A major sacrifice for a
sport hating geek like me!) and when he needed the
toilet,i went with him,because...you never know.

JB - I agree with your assessment on this breed of dog.

Speaking from  experience... its NOT the breed it's the owner. Like any animal, some are stronger, faster, aggressive, etc. but my dog, all 50 pounds of her wouldn't hurt a fly.

My stepdaughter has a Pitbull. Sweetest guy you'd ever want to meet. Loves to romp with my dog.

But when he turned three, it was as if someone flipped a switch. He began attacking other dogs, and now has to be walked with a muzzle.

It's not the owners. Don't kid yourself. It's the breed.

The breed is no more prone to violence than any other breed.  As with so many other things, it's people that are to blame.  And perpetuating misinformation only makes things worse for the thousands of good pit bulls that are dying in shelters, everyday, due to public ignorance.

One anecdote and a news story with a lot of red flags, HUMAN behavior wise, do not constitute absolute truths.

I'm not a dog expert, but how true is that, Mike?

I know the "wolf" is in them all, but I've been around many dogs. My neighbour had a Great Dane. It was docile, friendly and rather lazy (I imagine a bark or a chase would have been too much effort for it). Of course, I would watch a child around a Great Dane, but how prone to violence is a Great Dane?

I've been around Dalmatians. That's a snappy dog. That's a jealous dog that craves your attention. Woe betide any stranger you may talk to if the Dalmatian is with you.

My ex-partner's Jack Russell was always very snappy.

Aren't some breeds more prone to violence? Yes, they're all prone to violence, but aren't some breeds *more* prone? I don't know.

The problem with the breed is the trait of relentless grab and shake. They do not have a different jaw that 'locks'. They have an innate disposition to hold the bite and not give up. As JB says, everything is great until it determines to bite and ALL dogs bite. They are not pets. There are all kinds of great alternative companion breeds.

Pit bulls are banned over here.
There's pressure to lift the ban. I don't get it.

I used to think along the lines of "it's the owner not
the breed", but I'm really starting to wonder. A couple
I know each had their own pit bull from before they were
together. The lady half of the couple recently had her
face savaged while she was sleeping BY HERS. Out of
nowhere. How many "well that's just an isolated
incident" stories does it take to make people realize
that hey, this breed may not be the best idea for a
house dog?

At Dinner w Family Friends:

Stuffy Husband: "All pitbulls should be euthanized!"

Me: "Even mine?"

In 2012, we set out to adopt a different dog than the one we ended up with (typical shelter bait and switch). He was a five-month old pitbull who'd been severely abused and malnourished. Just ribs and attitude. He was labeled "fear aggressive" and we had a long list of things we couldn't do.

But after some hard work and training, he's grown up to be a wonderful dog -- Junior Mint. (You can follow him on IG as @pibblejuniormint) My female beagle/corgi Alpha Bitch Betty put him in his place immediately upon his arrival. Many years later, as he outgrew and outweighed her, he would still immediately sit in "good dog" pose if she so much as growled at him.

When Betty died last spring, Junior and I grieved together. He really rose up and supported me. He's been my constant companion since then, always within arm's reach of me. He's a great friend.

He's still fear-aggressive, but I know how to handle him. I don't put him in situations where he's likely to be in danger. He's great with dogs but cautious with people.

I've owned dogs all my life -- in my 53 years, I've never been without a canine companion -- but this is my first pitbull. And I'd have to say I'll get another. Mine came to me battered and scarred and abused and he's an amazing dog anyway. He's loving and connected and beautiful.
