I just realized...of all the star inkers of my youth (Rubinstein, Austin, Giordano, Wiacek, Layton, Janson, DeZuniga, etc.), the only one I've never seen ink JB would be Bob McLeod!  Am I right or did I just miss it?

(I'm trying to picture that pairing in my head and I can't quite do it!  It would either be wonderful or awful--I can't tell!)

Bob did finishes over my breakdowns on an issue of NEW MUTANTS. Don’t recall the number.

NEW MUTANTS 75.

He also inked a Black Panther/ Storm backup in MARVEL TEAM-UP 100.

They were both quite nice, Eric.

Forgot that backup. Banished it from my mind, I suppose.

Both were breakdowns, so don't really show what a match of Bob and me would look like.

I think the key thing is for the inker to be faithful to the pencils so that Byrne shows through. If it starts looking less Byrne-like, it's a fail for me. Karl Kesel and Paul Ryan were both notably good, I thought, but there are plenty of inkers over the years that I appreciated their inking working over JB's pencils.

I've been a fan of Wiacek's inks on JB's pencils. He feels like he's in the same wheelhouse as Austin.

Thanks!  I guess I have seen that MARVEL TEAM-UP story (saw it in a collection in a bookstore; don't own it), but I did not know about the NEW MUTANTS issue--will track that down!

Any other major inker that never inked JB?

JB, during the period you had more imput on the
selection of the inkers for some titles, how was the
selection process made? They obviously have some
porfolios, but were there some inking tests specific to
the projects? A meeting to explain what direction you
wanted the inking to go?...
