Perter how can that be?  If 1,800 die by heart disease a day and there's "only" been 20,493 deaths by COVID-19.

On the plus side, 29,675 have recovered in the US.  That's the number I prefer to focus on anyway.

Covid 19 is NOT the leading cause of death.

Kevin and JB - the USA has now surpassed 2,000 deaths per day from COVID, and the daily number continues to climb.  I was speaking of the leading cause of death on a daily basis, not the accumulated year to date.

Apparently, the article linked at https://www.livescience.com/coronavirus-leading-caus e-of-death.html. Which supports my view has caused the CDC to deny COVID is the daily leading cause of death.  But even based on the numbers presented by the CDC, COVID will become the most common daily cause of death if/when deaths per day exceed 2,564.

Please see the graph at the bottom of this article: https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/cor onavirus-deaths-united-states-each-day-2020-n1177936

I get the impression Americans are breathing a sigh of relief because the situation in NYC is stabilizing.  "Stabilizing" means 783 New Yorkers died of COVID in the last 24 hours.  And then consider how bad things are getting in Detroit and New Orleans.  Speculate how bad things will get in Florida with all it's seniors and how very long its Governor delayed before enforcing social distancing.

I really don't want to be right about this.  I want you all to stay safe and healthy.

Peter the total number is currently 20,580.  I've been self isolating since March 5th.  Even on average that would make it at most 700 per day starting from my date.  Far less than the 1,800 you mentioned for heart disease.

As JB said, Covid-19 is NOT the leading cause of death.

Besides, let's focus on the a larger number here: 29,809 have recovered.

I mean, that's great news for the infected and their loved ones, but that's NOT the number we need to be focused on. We need to be focused on the number of cases and the number of deaths, because that's what's going to help us determine how much longer we need to maintain our current stay-at-home and distancing measures, what areas we need to be concerned with as new hotspots, what areas need assistance with health care, etc.

No, the numbers we need to really focus on is that there 328+ million people in the US.  Only .16% have been confirmed to have caught the virus. There's no way of measuring who is asymptomatic or not.

I think it's about time to think about the positive and not the negative.

I think it is important to understand that the daily death numbers we are
seeing are because we have measures like social distancing &
lockdowns.

Now, granted, the effects of these are staring to trickle through & we
expect those numbers to start to fall.
But imaging that exponential line continuing to climb if we hadn’t taken
those measures.

This thing is highly infectious. Heart disease is not.

You let everyone get this @ the same time & the death numbers we are
seeing now? Drop in the ocean.

I think it's about time to think about the positive and not the negative.

——-

We can think about the positive when we can get everyone tested, when we’ve developed an antibody test so we know who is immune, when we’ve developed reliable treatments to lessen fatalities, and when we’ve developed a vaccine. Until then, we can remember history and learn a lesson from the Spanish flu pandemic, where the second wave, which came months after everyone thought the flu season has passed, was the deadliest.

Thinking about the positive now will just make some people let their guard down and think we can go back to “normal”. Even after a lot of the restrictions ease, a resurgence will be a concern for a long time.

I agree Michael.
Thinking about the positive will lead to increased frustration @ the
lockdowns & increase the risk of people seeing it as a frustration rather
than a measure to save lives

I've come to realize how lucky I am. Thus far, this pandemic has been, for me, little more than a mild inconvenience. It's basically my normal daily life with a few tweaks added.

Meanwhile, my civilian friends are going stir crazy.

As one of my fellow comic pros expressed it, we've been training for this our whole careers!

I recall Howard Porter saying that solitary confinement is punishment even within a prison; yet it is the chosen lifestyle for comic artists.
