R.I.P. , Prince Philip.

And, as expected, having been criticised for the various and many controversial remarks he made when he lived, he's already being rued as a character that we just don't have any more.

A presence my entire life. And a bit of a scoundrel, as tales are told!

The British musical comedy team Flanders & Swann wrote and performed a song about the growing prevalence of rude words in what was once a prim and proper society. Listing G-rated versions of such words, they offered this verse:

What did Prince Philip tell the Lords?

Well, never mind about that!!

Now the clock ticks for the Queen.

The Washington Post article neglects to mention his presence at the Battle of Cape Matapan onboard HMS Valiant.  Much of the eyewitness account of the point-blank battleship fight was from him due to him being in charge of the search lights in a night battle.

Could always be relied on to put his foot in his mouth on a regular basis, but I liked him despite it all. Sorry to hear of his passing. He had quite a life!

Now the clock ticks for the Queen...

I keep thinking she looks at that clock and just laughs and laughs...and then she pets a corgi and has a cup of tea.

OH GOD!  It just hit me.  The upcoming media storm over whether Harry and Meghan will be welcomed at the funeral!!??   ARRRGGGHHHH!!!

What do the people in Edinburgh do now? Do they elect a new Lord or is one appointed?

@ Steven M: As I understand it, Prince Edward will become the new Duke of Edinburgh.

Steven M., I hope you're joking about the people of Edinburgh.

It's a little arcane, but peerages are just titles, granted by the crown. They haven't been tied to the actual places (in general) for a thousand years.

(And if you go back 1000 years, Edinburgh didn't have an English monarch. It's just the form of the title: Duke of Somewhere.)

Prince Philip's peerages were hereditary. They pass to Prince Charles, not Prince Edward. And if Charles becomes king, they will be absorbed into the crown, as the sovereign holds no peerage.

LINK to the official word on the subject (you'll find it in the paragraph above the arms, near the bottom of the page).

@Peter: M: I presumed Charles would inherit, but I read (and I'll try to find the link) that the title will descend to Edward?

As an Edinburgher...I don't really care! :)

I'm half-joking I guess, because I don't understand titles at all, and have never seen a reason to research it.
