For the sake of historical accuracy—and not to defend Shooter—at that point in time it was Marvel’s official policy to call royalties “incentives”. Apparently there was some fear that “royalty” might be interpreted by some to imply ownership. (When I received my first “incentive” check for the X-Men reprint book, and it was three times my page rate as originally paid for that story, I promised to work harder to make sure subsequent issues sold better.)
