I was recently reading your and Howard Mackie's run on Amazing Spider-Man.
I wanted to tell you how great I thought the art was. I think it is some of the best art ever in a Spider-Man book.
Were there any villians you wanted to draw during this run, that you never had the chance to?

I had quite a bit of fun working with Howard on that run. We even got to play with Doc Ock and Mysterio, two of my favorite Spider-Man villains.Glad you enjoyed it, too!

I think Mysterio is under used. I think he'd do good in a Spider-Man movie villian if written correctly.

Awww, Howard Mackie's run, was the last half way good one before J. Michael Straczynski came along and screw things up.

I hated the run at the time, but my god, at least it was recognizably Spider-Man, which is more than I can say for the "Spider-Man" titles Marvel is publishing now...

John Byrne does Spider-man (like he does most things) better than just about anyone else not called Ditko...I am going to be getting these comics off ebay just as soon as my wallet recovers from the recent debilitating effects of only having one income getting into it, because I very much enjoyed Chapter One when I bought it recently...

into the trap of having the stories cross from my book
to JRjr's, so you'll need to pick up those issues, too.

In a few words, I was young and stupid. I hated the idea of all of Spider-Man's "change" and "growth" being undone (eg the return of Aunt May) or minimized as much as possible.

What I didn't like was two books renumbered and both having a new Spider-Man in them. It didn't make much sense.
Other than that, I also liked the run quite a bit and would have loved JB to stay at least until the MJ situation was resolved.

Something that was a delight. It was a great time, reading those issues and "Spider-Man: Chapter One" and "Spider-Woman" miniseries, as they came along!!!

He could be amazing in a Spider-Man movie and/ or video game, although
the sfx would be more important than how he's written. It just occurred
to me that Jack Kirby could have drawn a great Mysterio (he could've
drawn a great anyone, but imagine his trippy cosmic visuals in a story
where Mysterio uses high-tech illusions to mess with the Fantastic 4, or Thor, or Captain America, or whoever.)

I'm going to have to disagree with this. I prefer the creative runs
(imperfect as they may be) J Michael Stracynci, Brian Michael Bendis,
Paul Jenkins, Mark Millar, and Dan Slott to Howard Mackie &
Byrne's Chapter One, and do believe that the character they wrote in
their books was recognizably Spider-Man. And I didn't hate Mackie's run
at the time, although I didn't think it was amazing either (with a few
exceptions- The Flash's dream world Amazing saga & The Bullseye
& "Cliche" of Peter Parker Spider-Man still strike me as
particularly good.)
