I didn't like the artworks when Scott Hanna was the inker. He made a good job on JR Jr.'s arts, but not on JB's in my opinion.

The stories were good, and that was the real Spider-Man with the problems of the everyman. I'll always be disappointe dfor the return of aunt May, but the rest... Well, it doesn't deserve its bad fame.

recognizably Spider-Man

YYARGH MATEY!

If only Mackie and Byrne had come up with some real innovations, like biological webshooters, or maiming the main character somehow, or having Peter's 'true love' fuck his greatest enemy.

Maybe they're saving the testes for the JMS-penned issues.

Spider-Man losing his eye in battle is A) a shocking moment which will get people talking, B) a reminder that anything can happen in the Marvel Universe (especially important with the big changes DC is planning with Infinite Crisis, C) something that can and should have long-lasting ramifications, D) something that's not going to damage the character, and E) not out of character for Spider-Man or Morlun.

Is it honestly any worse than killing off Mary Jane (or apparantly killing her, and then keeping her out of the books for more than an year)?

If you consider that MJ was not actually shown killed, that there were windows left open for her escape and that MJ is not the book's main character (!), yes it is completely different.

I also don't remember anyone commenting how tasteful MJ's blood was.

As for your comments, yes, Spider-Man losing an eye has all those "advantages" you wrote down, only it shouldn't have come to this....
