As I look at various comments about ELSEWHEN online, I am struck again and again by the nimber of people complaining that the first volume “ends on a cliffhanger.”Okay, there’s not a LOT of people seemingly upset by this, but just enough that I wonder how many are unfamiliar with the concept of a TRILOGY. Because that’s what this project really is. A collection of adventures told over three volumes. (Originally 32 imaginary “issues” with no complaints about cliffhangers.) I look back on other trilogies we’ve seen over the decades. THE LORD OF THE RINGS (actually six books in three volumes), Asimov’s FOUNDATION, the original STAR WARS, BACK TO THE FUTURE. I’m not directly comparing my work to those others. But what ELSEWHEN has in common with them is its episodic nature. Those other works had plenty of cliffhangers (“Frodo was alive, but taken by the Enemy.”) and no one got upset. That there was more to come was understood. Would it have worked better for some if ELSEWHEN 1 had been announced not as a “graphic novel” but as what it is: the first volume of a TRILOGY?
