A generally nice take on ELSEWHEN. However, I disagree with the art being a little 'scratchy' - I think the ELSEWHEN art is an improvement over your previous work. Some surmising for sure, but does think you're a pretty decent person (except for that book signing issue - wha'd you do, throw a book at him?).

“Scratchy” is a meaningless term far too many fans use. If something is different it’s “scratchy”.

I would ask Perch, how is John’s work scratchy? Compared to what? JB’s art and storytelling within the pages of Elsewhen is better than 99% of the work produced within the comic book industry over the last 20 plus years. John Byrne’s body of work has made an enormous and incalculable impact upon comic book history. When you consider the number of comic book characters that John Byrne has either influenced, created and or designed, it is staggering. Can anyone imagine what the comic book industry would have been like without John Byrne? I can only think of a handful of writers and artists that may have ever influenced comic books as much as John Byrne. It's disappointing to me when critics and or publishers, including Marvel, fail to recognize this.

The vast majority (all?) of the pencils in Elsewhen were very tight. There's a splash in the video from the Child of Light and Darkness issue and it's super tight pencils; so tight, that you really wouldn't need to ink it if you wanted to publish it, so I don't see the scratchy thing at all based on the actual evidence of the art. The lines are smooth where they are supposed to be smooth; rough-textured where they are chosen to depict a rough texture.
My reaction when I go back to these pages is always the same: I am struck by just how tight the pencils are, tighter than I remember them.
He does acknowledge in the video that the pages look "great" and "wonderful".
He's right that your fan-fic is better than Marvel's official X-Men output. |

I just want to second what Peter stated. The pencils on Elsewhen are ridiculously tight and clean. Perhaps the video author is looking for the heavily digitally colored/painted style of many modern comics in which the ink lines to indicate shading are almost non-existent.

Can anyone imagine what the comic book industry would have been like without John Byrne?••• Maybe no Dark Phoenix? Maybe a lot less Wolverine. A different Superman reboot for sure. There’s a lot of stuff I’m proud of—but also some dark shadows. :-(

I’d rather stick with this universe. Way too many hours of sheer enjoyment
that came from the works of John Byrne for me to even think of altering the
timeline!

Considering that I have done work that was deliberately rougher and “scratchier” than my usual—COLD WAR for instance—it seems most obtuse to apply the term to the heavier, smoother line of ELSEWHEN. Perhaps it’s fan-speak for “not inked by Terry”?
