I saw that "fire tornado" story and thought of that too. Well, that and that Syfy will now inevitably make FIRE TORNADO: THE MOVIE...

Looking at today's incredible page has me thinking that as much as I'd like to see this inked, it's probably a good thing no one has that job. It would probably be a beast trying to ink those energy effects created using the elecric eraser!

 | •• One thing I DIDN'T like about Terry's inks was the way his crisp, hard line tended to TIDY UP everything. Go look at some of the Kirby Krackle I used back in the day. Even now, when I do a big energy effect, part of my brain is imagining what it would look like if Terry inked it.

JB, when you are pencilling, do you still use french curves and other similar tools, or is it all freehand? The curved lines of the Phoenix energy effect had me wondering, as well as Lilandra’s wing effect.

I still use tools, but the instances you cite are freehand.

Just based on pure “Phoenix” aesthetics....I’m rooting for Lilandra!  Her natural “bird” physiology melds well with the Phoenix force.  She LOOKS like a Phoenix without the need for a fancy bird logo to tell you.

Last few issues are really making me appreciate that this isn't being inked. It just wouldn't look the same, wouldn't even look close!

That’s okay, Jason! The point cannot be over-emphasized!

Dark Phoenix vs Dark Phoenix - amazing! Part of me wants to think about the coloring of that battle, but I realize that it needs none. As the Phoenix Force has a personality conflict, I'm sure the attacking forces would be blown right up through the color scale to white anyhow. And I'll use my imagination to fill in the rest.

COROLLARY: The opposite of light is shadow, and the shadowing and shades on this page are joyful imagery to me. I'm sure that it's much harder drawing what ain't than drawing what is.
I find it intriguing that this battle seems focused on its combatants, I still don't think of Dark Phoenix as... um... composed and restrained. I would have suspected that they would be tearing up landscape left and right, throwing trees, boulders, mail boxes*, etc. at each other. But it's obvious localized enough that Cyclops and Jahf can observe it relatively safely. Even if Jahf might survive it... it doesn't even seem to put a hair (fur?) out of place. That's nice storytelling!!!
 *Yeah, I know. I'm sorry. |

As a parent, this story line has me feeling for the Greys.

As a comic fan, I am still in awe. The story, pacing, and art. Magnificent.
And, I thought electric erasers were gone with board drafting. |
