Fun when I miss a few days for assorted reasons. So much to read, so much goodness in this part too - glad to hear Guardian was the 'real' name, Alpha Flight did seem odd for the team name, but fit for a government agency (the Alpha/Beta/Gamma/etc. idea is so government) - not a fan of 'Canadian Shield' but I suspect it would've grown on me too if used, and really obvious why Marvel would never approve it.
I like that Jean is not Dark Phoenix in Astra's mind, but old Phoenix (who saved the universe when they first met iirc). I like that everyone in her mind is as she remembers them, not necessarily how she last saw them or how they see themselves. A nice change from what we see normally in mindscapes (everyone as they see themselves or as they currently are).
So much goodness to follow - just when I thought all the subplots were getting cleaned up a batch more open up. Makes it easier to imagine this series going a few more years (the longer the better).

In science, it is sometimes said that every answer is really another question. Writing serial fiction like this, I find every subplot turns out to be the basis for another, and another, and another. . . . . Of course, the bane of readers and writers alike is the "dangling subplot", usually something a writer tossed in as a throwaway line, then forgot.

I love how true Jean in this series isn't cruel or mean, but she's strong-willed and has a bit of a temper. She can go toe to toe with the best of 'em, even if she'd rather be putting her life back together.

I think back to the earliest issues, where Jean (despite Stan's odd tendency to occasionally diminish her) could, from her debut, more than hold her own with the boys.Unfortunately, keeping her "just a girl" was a persistent motif, with Strong Jean scenes in the art being muted by the script. (Chris, of course, took her to the opposite extreme, so empowering her that turning her into a villain was ultimately seen as the only way to rescue the rest of the team from becoming fifth wheels in their own book!)

Very nice page today. Looking forward to the Jean vs Astra cook off. Does anyone have other examples of when a character became too powerful in their own team? Some Avengers rosters tip the power scales quite a bit, but I can’t think of another team where one character’s rise in power got out of hand the way Jean did in UXM. However, I didn’t follow many team books growing up.

The problem more often took the opposite form, with groups like the JLA facing off against opponents who could have been easily dealt with by individual members in their own books.

Superman certainly is capable all by himself. I’ve heard many writers grouse about how tough it is to write a plausible challenge for Superman.
