This splash page is sooo much fun to look at. It's as if you've channeled yourself from 1980, but with all the evolution as an artist you've experienced in the years since.
I'm mesmerized, looking at all the folds in Storm's cape, and how the texture is clearly different from her metal wristbands, etc.

I've been thinking (probably too much) about what you said a few threads back---about how the highlights/shading are inverted on the X-men's dark uniforms, and what might be the cause in terms of the physics of light transport.
a) white highlight is a direct reflection of the source from a shiny black material
b) white highlight (at edges) is a reflection of the environment from a grazing angle (Fresnel reflection)
c) white highlight (around edges) is a retro-reflection or "sheen" back at the source and towards the eye (e.g. silk)
Whatever the phenomena that would be causing it, there's no denying it looks "right" (and gorgeous in your execution).

This book is such a potent form of time travel, even the creator is becoming unstuck in time!
I love this Storm. We haven't seen her in many years. Formidable, but kind.

Panel one of the page 2-3 double page spread is such a wonderful use of the space. Most of the time a DPS is just one great big image, but the perspective and depth on that panel are fantastic. I also like the fact this DPS is more than just one great big panel. The story telling we get across the bottom also zooms in and out to mimic panel 1.
JB, ever thought about an all landscape oriented Elsewhen issue like you did with the FF many moons ago?

Poor Ororo!When people talk about how Chris wrote the X-Men for so many years, I often point out that's not entirely true. Altho the cover still said X-MEN, he changed the characters and the concepts so much and so often, he didn't really have anything like a contiguous run. The changes in Storm reflect this.

Amazing -these opening pages for this issue are some of the best pages I've seen by John (so far). Every element from panel layout to backgrounds to figures to faces to lighting all coming together to most impressive effect. Even the subtle shape of the top panel of pages 2-3 drawing your eye across the panel... Just stellar...
