I thought it was because Wolverine didn't know him as well as he knew the other team members. Shaman wasn't in the original issues early on was he? I thought he and Marina were added when AF got their own book.

Shaman was in the original debut of the team. It was his magic that caused the snowstorm that forced the X-Men's plane to land in Calgary.
