critics, sometimes not, and sometimes the critic will be completely off-
base, but the critic's own abilities shouldn't even be a factor in a
discussion like this"
I know this and understand this. But I sure would like to see how well
some of these guys draw. It's really just a personal thing to me I
suppose. These drawings are private commissions. We have JB and the
owners to thank for letting us see them. And on seeing them to say, "eh,
that's kinda crappy" is rude to John and rude to the owner. I think that
published comic art is fair game. After all, it is put out there for the
public to enjoy or not.............but these drawing are different, I think, and
should have a little bit more respect. If you don't like them - fine. But at
least have the courtesy to keep your mouth shut if you don't.

I think it's rude to pass judgement on a piece someone else has payed a good amount of money for.
That said, I would like to say that the piece looks great, Storm looks a bit weird but I blame the cape for that (it hides certain parts of her anatomy like the shoulders). Aslo, the pose reminds me that Ororo is flying in confined space. It feels natural for me that she would have that pose, since she is claustrophobic. The picture is more alive and dynamic like that, showing us a story.
As for the rest of the figures, they are all top notch.
As for the costume, I became aware of the Shi'ar costume way later, after I had already seen the JB brown and orange one. When I saw it, I thought that John must have had that costume in his mind when he designed his own version.

But I sure would like to see how well some of these guys draw. It's really just a personal thing to me I suppose.
I'm sure that will happen the day after everyone on the Internet who complains about how ugly or fat various Hollywood actresses are start posting their own swimsuit photos online for everyone to critique.
Personally, I'm not likely to post on a commissioned piece thread if my only input is "that perspective's waaaaay off," since there's only so much free time in the day to go around offering unsolicited "corrections" to artists.

But this is published art in the respect that JB and the owner choose to put it on a public forum.
And secondly JB has never been shy to come forward with his own criticism of all number of TV shows, films etc - that the majority here are only to happy to join in with. Do we criticise him and them for not being TV or Film Directors when they do this.?
Of course none of us can draw as well as JB or we would have spent the last 20-odd years working for DC and Marvel. However should that mean that we have to agree that this particular piece is up to his usual exacting standards even if we think that it is not..?

course, you can draw it better yourself - then feel free to post your
critique along with your drawing that fixes all of the mistakes.

Careful there Wayne... as far as I can tell there are a few on this forum that can do just that... but will they? Don't know, don't care... it is an interseting thought thou... redo a JB commission by someone else, because in their mind it is wrong in someway... hmmm.... makes one wonder just what they are able to see wrong, if they have never come up with the creative art in the first place?
Alot of my clients are like that, they don't know what they want... after talking to them for a couple of hours and coming back with something physical... BAM!!! they know what is wrong or what they envisioned...
Odd that this thinking would be lurking in here... very odd...

I've long wondered JB, just how much input does the client have at different stages of a commission? Do they approve layouts, pencils, etc before inking, or is it straight to the final piece from their initial request?

JB, "Like Unto a Thing of Iron" has the sound of one of those classic Stan Lee
titles. The title of the original story? A quotation from something literary
I'm not picking up on? Or an original coinage?
