Mark Waid says he hated the businessman Luthor because
"Superman never beats him" right? How did Superman ever
"beat" Luthor pre Crisis? Sure he foiled his plans and
locked him up in jail but next issue, or heck next story in
the same issue Luthor would break out of prison and hatch
another evil plot. How is that any different from Superman
foiling businessman Luthor's evil plot but not able to
prove it and lock him away. Either way Luthor goes on to
the next scheme that Superman will stop again.

Luthor's purple and green is iconic to people of a certain age group, myself included, probably because of the Super Friends cartoon.

I liked JB's Luthor, but I was hoping for the character to eventually start running on a treadmill.

Mark Waid missed the whole point to Luthor, didn't he? Yet he kept "Businessman" Luthor in Birthright, now didn't he? Maybe it would have been more appropriate for him to write Batman with Two-Face as the villain....

Oh, and, yeah, Darkseid needs to appear in a Superman movie.

Yes, my concern exactly. Darkseid was introduced wonderfully, imho, as a sinister character almost behind the scenes of JIMMY OLSON, the FOREVER PEOPLE and MISTER MIRACLE. To try to launch him as the main villain of a Superman movie would be like making Sauron the main villain in The HOBBIT.

No one ever laid a hand on Darkseid in Kirby's Fourth World stories. I don't think Darkseid himself ever directly fought any of Kirby's heroes, either. The idea of him being right in the thick of the action seems to come from the Superfriends cartoon in the mid-1980s, after which all bets were off.
He's been used in the opening Justice League storyline in the New 52, as kind of an unstoppable force, but I'm hoping that he'll be used very, very sparingly. If several years go between Darkseid appearances, that would be fine by me. I'd probably vote for no more New Gods stories unless someone with as clear a vision as Walt Simonson wanted to tackle them.

I guess we have different definitions of "beat" him. Putting Lex in jail
is beating him. He escapes; he beat him again.
(Though I think Superman beat business man Luthor everytime he
stops his plans, too, but I could see someone viewing that as a
stalemate, rather than a victory.)

I'm familiar with Luthor's green and purple jumpsuit because of the SuperFriends cartoon, but I kinda hated the battle armor (designed by Perez???) (though I like the SuperPowers action figure!)
When MOS gave us Business Suit Luthor it totally clicked and made so much story sense that THIS NOW is a villian for Superman. Retroactively I saw how Luthor didn't make sense before.

I like an amalgamation of the two. A wealthy Luthor who is also a great scientist. I don't want to see him in hand to combat, but have him design weapons and armour for flunkies to wear.(and he loses and gets imprisoned at the end of his schemes)Without his scientific genius, he's just DC's version of the Kingpin.
The other component that seems to have been dropped is that at one time Luthor and Clark were best friends. This adds so much to their history and makes their being enemies much more compelling. This may have become a cliche, but as far as I know Luthor and Clark started the cliche and they are the ones who should have this component. They've tried to shoehorn this into Batman and Harvey Dent relationship, but I find it much more compelling with Clark and Luthor

IIRC, Harvey Dent and Batman have been friends since the first Two-Face story in the Golden Age. Clark Kent's friendship with Luthor is from the Silver Age Superboy strip.

Yup. When all is said and done, this is my Luthor:
The Luthor from before this era is a stranger to me. Versions of Luthor that came later might be better, but are trumped by nostalgia.

One thing I did always wonder though, what were in those little green cylinders that Luthor wore on that criss cross belt across his chest? I don't recall ever seeing him use them for anything.
