The other component that seems to have been dropped is that at one time Luthor and Clark were best friends. This adds so much to their history and makes their being enemies much more compelling.

*********

SER: I don't believe Lex Luthor and *Clark* were ever best friends. This came from SMALLVILLE. Lex was a fan of Superboy's. Fan isn't necessarily a "friend," in my view. Lex had a shrine devoted to him and an unhealthy hero worship. He then believed Superboy "betrayed" him. It's interesting how this is classic borderline personality behavior and classic obsessed fan syndrome -- the same mentality that leads to Mark David Chapman killing John Lennon. Obviously, this was never the intent when the origin story was written. However, I bring it up to underscore the point that the two were never what we'd call friends (especially during the Silver Age when Clark Kent and Superboy were practically separate personas).

I prefer Luthor in the green/purple outfit, but not the armor. The armor would have worked for me as a one time story, before he quickly goes back to his suit.  Brilliant, charismatic scientist manipulating other villains & events to attack Superman. Yeah, that works.

The Armor made Lex more like Dr. Doom. I wonder if that was the
intent. I like the armor better than the suit, but that just because the
suit looked wrong. I mean, green and purple are standard villain
colors but the costume didn't look good.

ne thing I did always wonder though, what were in those little green
cylinders that Luthor wore on that criss cross belt across his chest? I
don't recall ever seeing him use them for anything.

So it Lex's fault that Cyclop's got a uniform with fifty pockets that he
never used!

I liked the suit of course, and JB's CEO version, but I liked the armor even more. It put Luthor on the same "power-level" as Superman. All too often, Luthor would previously have one or two schemes get foiled, and then swiftly end up being carried by his shirt collar to prison. The armor allowed him to battle the Big Blue Boy Scout more equally when forced to, pitting his ingenious devices against the alien.

I think Lex Luthor is best played as the Evil Iron Man, as he is seen in the movie. Smart and witty, lethal, quick thinking on his feet, improvising death traps for Superman. I'd make him younger too.

I liked both the purple power suit and the later armor for the sole reason that Luthor was no longer wearing his ubiquitous prison greys. Seriously, the guy breaks out of prison, puts together an elaborate death trap for Superman, and he's so consumed by hatred that he can't be bothered to change his clothes? Gotta admire that level of obsession, I guess.

Lex as "the guy you cannot touch" is a more complex challenge than "guy in green and purple armor" though. I'd rather NOT see him contend with Superman that way-- why should a supergenius fight someone with superstrength? To prove that he can?

There are LOTS of villains who can give Superman a drubbing; there are very few who can pull strings to make his life absolutely miserable. Lex ought to be in the latter category.

And as I said earlier, I think Luthor is one of the very few villains who could unleash total havoc on Earth if he chose to do so. So why doesn't he have any grand schemes? Why does he spend his time obsessing over Superman when he could be planning to take over the world?

Yes, Lex should hve plans for conquest that Superman must stop. If it's
just Lex trying to kill Superman, that is less interesting to me.
